SWO Volunteer Highlight: Paws with Purpose 🐾

Our Windsor/Essex Therapy Dog Coordinator, Lesley and her incredible therapy dog, Angus, recently had their first day supporting individuals involved in the court process.

Angus brought his calm, gentle nature to the Victim Witness Assistance Program (VWAP), offering comfort and support to both clients and staff.

We are so proud of Lesley and Angus for helping bring compassion, comfort and a little extra courage and pets to those who need it most in their community.

🗓️ Why June 17th Kicks Off "St. John’s Week" 🎉

If you’ve noticed the iconic eight-pointed black-and-white crosses 🛡️ popping up more than usual this week, there’s a massive historical reason for it! June 17th officially marks the start of "St. John’s Week" — the annual lead-up to St. John’s Day (June 24th), which is the most important date on the global St. John Ambulance calendar. 🗓️✨

For over a century, communities use this specific week in June to honor the tens of thousands of volunteers, paramedics, and first aid instructors who dedicate their lives to keeping us safe. 🏥❤️

🪵 The Deep Historical Ties 📜
The connection between this week and the modern ambulance service goes back nearly a thousand years:

The Patron Saint: June 24th is the Feast of St. John the Baptist. In the year 1099, a group of monks in Jerusalem formed a hospice to care for sick and injured pilgrims. They became the Knights Hospitaller ⚔️ (or the Order of St. John) and chose St. John as their protector.

The Modern Rebirth: Fast forward to 1877 in England. Facing massive industrial workplace accidents, the modern Order created St. John Ambulance to train everyday citizens in the brand-new science of "First Aid." 🩹🇬🇧

The Canadian Roots: By 1883, the organization crossed the Atlantic to Canada 🇨🇦, starting its first life-saving courses in Quebec City and Ontario. 🍁
Today, St. John’s Week is officially proclaimed by municipalities across the country to celebrate the massive footprint these volunteers leave behind. 🌲🏙️
