🦷 Systemic Impact of Periodontal Diseases and Prevention: The Role of the Dental Assistant 🦷

Periodontal diseases are chronic inflammatory infections of the supporting tissues of the teeth that not only lead to tooth loss but are also linked to serious systemic conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, respiratory infections, and adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Dental Assistants play a vital frontline role in prevention by reinforcing oral hygiene instructions, recognizing early signs of gingival inflammation, supporting infection control, and promoting patient education on risk factors such as smoking and poor glycemic control. Because Assistants often spend significant time with patients, their communication, motivation, and clinical support are essential in improving adherence to preventive care and reducing the broader public health burden of periodontal disease.

About Dr. Glogauer: Dr. Michael Glogauer is an internationally recognized dental clinician-scientist (DDS, 1993; PhD, 1999; Dip Perio, 1999) and a leader in dentistry, oral immunity, oral diseases, alveolar bone grafting, and the links between oral and systemic health. He completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School (1999-2001). He is a Professor at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto (since 2002), the Head of Dentistry for the University Health Network, Chief of Dental Oncology at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and owner of OMGPerio, a periodontal and dental implant practice in Hamilton, Ontario.

Dr. Glogauer has received awards for scientific excellence (Quality of Life research award from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)-IMHA-2006) and has been funded by MRC/CIHR since 1994. He has generated over 280 peer-reviewed publications in the fields of dentistry, oral health, and immunology with over 18,500 citations and an H-Factor of 80. He has 7 patents and is CEO and co-founder of start-up Ostia Sciences, which focuses on oral microbiome testing and probiotic development. He is a Fellow in the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.

Standardized workflows and routine testing of equipment such as waterlines, sterilization, and nitrous systems ensure efficiency, compliance, and patient safety.
