Today, September 4th, is PKD awareness day. I was diagnosed with PKD in my early 20’s and I am now in kidney failure, on dialysis, and hoping to find a living donor so that I can get back to life! Please help to raise awareness by sharing this post.

Almost 6 weeks ago, I had to pause dialysis (PD), due to a pleural effusion (fluid leaking into my lung). 6 weeks pause gives me a 50/50 chance that the leak will heal. Last night was my first night back on dialysis and I was both happy and nervous. If the leak has not healed, I’ll have to stop PD and switch to hemodialysis. The first night has gone well, so keeping my fingers and toes crossed that it continues to go well. Taking it one night at a time! Apparently this is a rare (1-2%) PD complication. Lucky me. 🙄 Hoping a transplant will one day make all this a distant memory. 💚

He’s always such a big help. 😂.

Want to know what it looks like when PD dialysis fluid leaks into your lung? I was having trouble with my final fluid drains so they sent me for an Xray to see if my catheter had moved. Instead, what they found was PD fluid that had leaked into my chest. They wanted a CT scan to confirm it was actually PD fluid so they put contrast fluid into my belly and sent me for the CT scan. The scan clearly shows the fluid in my right lung. There’s a chance the leak can heal on its own if given time, so I can’t do dialysis for 2-6 weeks. Praying my kidneys have enough function to get me through this pause and hoping that I’ll be able to get back to regular dialysis and feeling better soon. Apparently, while a leak is rare, it is slightly more common in people with PKD because our large kidneys mean less room in the abdomen for the PD fluid - which means more pressure in the abdomen when the fluid is dwelling. Despite all this, I am still happy with my choice to do PD and I’m hoping to get back to regularly scheduled programming. 😉

I haven’t been able to do Perioteneal Dialysis (PD) for three days now. After having troubles with draining for a few nights, I was sent for a chest Xray which showed fluid in my chest on the right side. Have a CT scan tomorrow to see if PD fluid is leaking into my chest. The cat always knows when I need some comforting… he hopped into my lap almost immediately when I got home from the bloodwork. ❤️🐈 I’m hoping the CT shows no leaking fluid so that I can resume PD! 🙏🏻

Was on my way to a doctor’s appointment today and noticed this bench in the nearby town of Discover Lucan Biddulph … we were also behind a car with a “I shared my spare - living kidney donor” bumper sticker. I love seeing all this awareness being raised. 💚

April is Organ Donation Awareness Month.

90% of Canadians say they support organ donation, but only 32% are actually registered.

Let's change that:
Wear green. Register. Tell Your Family. Inspire & Be Inspired.

There are more than 4,000 Canadians waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. And these aren't just numbers - I'm one of them.

Please help me raise awareness - YOU can make a difference! Share this post, wear green and inspire others.

Found these pamphlets at my local Service Ontario office. You can register as an organ donor there or go to beadonor.ca. Talk to your family about your wishes. You could save several lives! Canadian Generosity can save lives! 💚

April 7: Green Shirt Day, which recognizes the and raises awareness about organ donation. It is also National Caregiver Day, which is close to my heart as my husband has been such a wonderful caregiver throughout my kidney disease and now dialysis. We wear green together today to help raise awareness and encourage conversations about organ donation.
