To care well for others, we also have to care for ourselves.

Sometimes that means stepping away from the clinic, putting down our phones, carrying a canoe over a portage, sitting by a lake, and remembering what it feels like to simply be.
Healing isn't only found in treatments and prescriptions. It's found in nature, in stillness, in meaningful conversations, and in supporting one another.

After all, one of the oldest principles of medicine is: "Physician, heal thyself." 🌲🛶

Protein has gone from under-appreciated to over-prescribed in the wellness world. And like most things in nutrition… the truth sits somewhere in the middle.

Protein is essential.

It supports muscle, hormones, neurotransmitters, and overall physiological resilience. It also provides calories and does influence insulin.

But more is not always better.

Protein needs are not universal. They vary depending on the individual, digestion, metabolic health, inflammatory status, activity level, and underlying disease processes.

So when you hear a fixed target like “1.2g per pound of body weight,” it’s worth pausing.

Because what if:
• your digestion isn’t breaking it down well
• your overall metabolic context doesn’t match that demand
• or your system is reacting to specific protein antigens in ways that are unsupportive.

Nutrition is not a one-size-fits-all formula.
There is no single “optimal” protein number that applies to every body. Most nutrition trends: no context.

If you're unsure what you need to prioritize....as the case with some of my patients (intermittent fasting vs. getting all their proteins, or dairy intolerance vs. cottage cheese for their daily >170g/day assumed needs), let's take a step back and assess what the body needs today in your current condition.

With loads of love for all those who are loving and enjoying their optimal protein diet. This message is only meant to bring balance 💗

Feeling better is not the finish line. When things start to improve, it's easy to think "I'm better now, I can go back to normal".

'Normal' being the same old patterns and habits that lead to the initial problem to begin with.

Healing is often misunderstood as a linear progression from "unwell" to "well".

But it is a layered process.

The goal is not short-term symptom change.

The goal is sustained resilience, a deep knowing & understanding of what your body's various signals/symptoms mean, and what your body is asking for when you're feeling even slightly off balance.

Why continuity of care matters.

Two people can have the same diagnosis and need completely different approaches—based on their history, physiology, and underlying drivers.

This is why so much of my work happens outside the appointment.

Reviewing, researching, and building plans that actually reflect the full picture.

If you’re tired of generalized plans (including those done by AI 🤭) and want care that’s actually tailored to you, I offer in-depth consultations where we look at the full picture.

If that's the kind of care you've been looking for, you can book a consultation through the link in my bio. If you're in London Ontario, I offer in-person visits, and if not, I work with patients virtually across Ontario.

Even "natural" medicine can miss the mark. You don't need more supplements. You need a smarter plan.

One of the most common patterns I see in clinic isn’t low empathy—it’s chronic over-empathy.

When someone we love is struggling, many of us unconsciously mirror their distress. We stay emotionally “on,” hyper-attuned, bracing alongside them.

Clinically, this matters.

Constant emotional vigilance keeps the HPA axis activated, driving sustained cortisol output. Over time, this can show up as anxiety, poor sleep, PMS, cycle changes, fatigue, blood sugar instability, and burnout.

Absorbing someone else’s pain doesn’t regulate their nervous system—it dysregulates yours.

From a physiological standpoint, the most supportive thing you can offer is your own regulation.

Calm is not indifference.
Boundaries are not withdrawal.
Staying well is not selfish.

Sometimes the greatest service is choosing not to suffer with someone—so you can remain steady for them.

Yin -still, cool, deep.

This is what Winter draws out in nature.
The restless, moving waves quiet, replaced by a deeper kind of presence.

And so it can be with our bodies and our inner worlds too —whether we notice it or not.

There isn’t much of this inward, depth-seeking season left.

May we not only endure it,
but learn to treasure it.

The link is correlation only.

Think salt & heart disease: salt was blamed for years, only for us to realize the real issue was processed foods. And as processed foods tend to contain high salt content, salt was then wrongly accused. Sodium is essential and too little is actually associated with increased risk of hospitalization.

Melatonin is getting the same treatment. A study found an association between melatonin use and heart disease — not causation. A far more likely explanation? Chronic 𝘴𝘭𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘥𝘦𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. People who don’t sleep well are more likely to use melatonin, and poor sleep itself being a major cardiovascular risk factor...you get the picture, melatonin gets painted as the culprit but while the real issue is sleep deprivation.

Melatonin is a 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲 our bodies produce naturally to support our sleep. And It’s also a ✨potent antioxidant,
🤒supports immune balance,
🌞 helps cortisol release (in a beneficial manner), 💃🏻has anti-estrogenic effects that can be supportive when needed
👶🏻used clinically in infants in parts of Europe for respiratory tract infections
🦀and studied for cancer support (at super high doses).

This isn’t a “take it casually” hormone — timing and context matter. But when used thoughtfully, melatonin isn’t harmful or dangerous. It’s often misunderstood — and in many cases, helpful and essential for regulating circadian rhythms and more...

Lastly, melatonin is one of the worse supplements in terms of what manufacturers claim is in the bottle and what is actually in the bottle: A 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟳 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 𝗯𝘆 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗚𝘂𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗵, published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, analyzed 30 Canadian commercial melatonin supplements and found that 𝟕𝟏% of them did not meet label claims. Don't pick off random bottles off the shelf for this one.
