It was a pleasure to participate in this year’s Drug Therapy Day at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, an annual educational event organized by the Division of Clinical Pharmacology & Toxicology.

Thank you to George Dresser for the invitation and to Steven Gryn for moderating an engaging session. It was also wonderful to share the program with colleagues Isabel Bustamante Benjumea and Blanca Del Pozzo.

I had the opportunity to speak on Recognizing and Managing Dermatologic Emergencies in Primary Care, focusing on practical approaches to identifying patients who require urgent assessment and escalation of care. Key red flags for primary care clinicians include extensive body surface area involvement, significant skin pain, fever, lymphadenopathy, and mucosal involvement.

Many GP colleagues have told me that Drug Therapy Day is one of the highest-value educational events they attend each year. If you missed it this year, I strongly encourage you to consider attending in the future.

Educational events like this highlight the importance of collaboration between primary care and specialists to ensure patients with serious skin disease are recognized early and receive timely, appropriate care.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the discussion.

☀️ Exciting news in sun protection!

Health Canada has recently expanded approval of PARSOL® Shield (Bemotrizinol), allowing this advanced UV filter to be used in a wider range of sunscreen and daily skincare products. 🧴☀️

Bemotrizinol is the first new sunscreen ingredient approved for use in over-the-counter products in North America since the late 1990s.

Why we’re excited about this:
✔ Broad-spectrum UVA + UVB protection
✔ Exceptional photostability
✔ Strong defense against photoaging & pigmentation
✔ Low irritation potential
✔ Minimal skin absorption
✔ Helps stabilize other sunscreen filters
✔ Lightweight, elegant formulations
✔ No white cast

It represents one of the most significant advances in sunscreen technology available to consumers in decades!

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month ☀️🧴

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in Canada, but it’s also one of the most preventable.

💡 What you should know:
• UV exposure is the leading cause - from the sun and tanning beds
• There is no such thing as a safe tan
• Early detection can be life-saving

🔍 Check your skin monthly using the ABCDEs:
Asymmetry | Border | Colour | Diameter | Evolving

🛡️ Protect your skin daily:
• Wear broad-spectrum SPF 30+
• Seek shade when UV Index ≥3
• Wear protective clothing + wide-brim hats
• Avoid tanning beds

In Canada, awareness matters more than ever. As rates continue to rise, and prevention is key. If you notice any changing or unusual spots, don’t wait - visit your physician and a referral can be made to Dermatology if needed!

April is Rosacea Awareness Month

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that most commonly affects the central face - including the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead. It can present as persistent redness, flushing, visible blood vessels, and sometimes acne-like breakouts.

In Canada, rosacea affects over 3 million people, often between the ages of 30–60, and tends to flare and settle over time.

✨ Common triggers:
• Sun exposure, wind, and temperature changes
• Stress and exercise
• Alcohol, hot drinks, and spicy foods

✨ What helps:
• Daily sun protection - a key step in reducing flare-ups
• Gentle, non-irritating skincare
• Identifying and avoiding personal triggers
• Medical treatments when needed (tailored to your skin)

Rosacea is NOT contagious and NOT caused by poor hygiene - but without treatment, symptoms can progress over time. Early support can make a meaningful difference.

Chemical Peels vs. Skinvive 💧✨

Not sure which is right for you?

• Chemical Peels exfoliate the surface to improve texture, tone, acne, and pigmentation. Think: smoother, brighter skin.
• Skinvive hydrates from within using hyaluronic acid injections to boost glow, smoothness, and overall skin quality.

✨ Peel = resurfacing
💧 Skinvive = hydration + glow

Book your consultation to find your perfect match.
