Gluten can cross react with thyroid tissue.
What does cross reactivity mean?
Many tissue proteins in the body are structurally similar to those in foods. For instance, some amino acid sequences in thyroid tissue are identical to amino acid sequences in gluten.
If you are gluten sensitive or have celiac disease – as many Hashimoto’s patients are -- you may experience an autoimmune attack against your thyroid every time you eat gluten.
Gluten also cross reacts with cerebellum tissue in the brain, which means the autoimmune attacks are also happening in the brain.
Symptoms of this can include issues with vertigo, poor balance, instability issues, and worsened car sickness.
To check your balance, stand with your feet together and your arms by your side and close your eyes. If you sway and start to fall over, you have poor balance.
You can try the Romberg's test. See if you can walk heel to toe in a straight line without losing your balance, then see if you can do it with your eyes closed.
If you sway and shake and go all over the place, this is called ataxia and stems from cerebellar injury or inflammation impacting your balance.
Another common finding is termination tremors. When you reach to grab something, does your hand shake or your fingers bounce just before you grab?
