This is the most common concern we hear before a patient starts spinal decompression at Cameron Family Chiropractic β€” and it's understandable. If your disc is already bulging or herniated, the idea of adding any kind of force to the spine sounds counterintuitive.

But here's what most people aren't told:
Spinal decompression is not strapping someone to a table and pulling as hard as possible. It's a precise, computer-controlled process with specific angles, specific force, and specific treatment cycles β€” all determined by where the disc injury is located, how severe it is, and what the surrounding structures look like.

When done correctly, decompression creates a change in pressure inside the disc that reduces compression on the nerve β€” not increases it. The disc material is encouraged to retract. The nerve gets space to calm down and recover.

The key word is correctly. Proper patient selection and proper treatment setup are everything. At Cameron Family Chiropractic, no one begins spinal decompression without a thorough evaluation first.

When you can’t get up for frequent breaks, a gentle sciatic nerve glide may help calm sharp, burning, or traveling leg pain while sitting.
The movement should feel smooth and controlled with only light tension, never sharp pain. If the pulling disappears when you return to the starting position, that’s usually a good sign you’re staying within a comfortable range.

Sciatica pain often builds gradually the longer you stay seated, even if you feel okay at first.
Short movement breaks every 20 to 30 minutes can help reduce pressure, improve circulation, and keep the nerves calmer throughout the day.
Small, consistent resets are often more effective than waiting for the pain to flare up.

When your hips sit lower than your knees, extra pressure gets placed on the lower back and hips, which can increase nerve tension into the legs while sitting.
Raising your sitting height slightly so the hips are just above the knees can help reduce strain and make sitting feel much more comfortable.
Small posture changes can create a big difference over time.

Peripheral neuropathy is different from sciatica or nerve compression in the spine.
Symptoms often begin in the feet and may feel more constant, burning, tingling, numbness, or altered sensation that does not change much with posture or movement.
Because this involves nerve health itself, proper medical evaluation is important.

Sciatica describes pain traveling down the leg along the sciatic nerve, but it does not explain what’s causing it.
Disc bulges, spinal stenosis, and even hip or piriformis-related irritation can all create sciatica symptoms.
That’s why lasting relief depends on identifying the true source, not just treating the label.
