"Thanks to everyone who was involved in bringing forth and outfitting of this very important facility at Fishermen's." Rachel Martin.

Much effort was contributed towards outfitting and provision of finishing touches to Hospice rooms by our FMH Auxiliary back in 2024/25.

This week, we were honoured to join our partners at Nova Scotia Health and the South Shore Hospice Palliative Care Society to celebrate the official opening of the new five-bed hospice unit at Fishermen's Memorial Hospital.

This beautiful new space represents years of vision, dedication, and collaboration to ensure compassionate end-of-life care is available close to home for families across the South Shore.

A heartfelt thank you to the incredible staff, volunteers, partners, and everyone who worked tirelessly to bring this hospice unit to life. Your commitment has created a place where patients and their loved ones can receive comfort, dignity, and care when it matters most.

Congratulations to everyone who made this milestone possible. 💙

Today was the official opening of the Hospice beds at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital in Lunenburg. Trudy Johnson and the Board of the South Shore Hospice Palliative Care Society have worked incredibly hard to achieve this goal. There are now 5 beds available with all the supporting staff to make this peaceful, family centred end of life care space. Congratulations to all the staff and volunteers who have played a role in making this day happen.

Today was a day of celebration as community partners gathered to mark the official opening and full activation of the five-bed hospice unit at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital.

It took years of advocacy to secure a commitment for this unit, and longer than any of us wished to staff it. But the end result is a comfortable and comforting space and a wonderful and highly-trained team led by Dr. Patricia Caldeira, which together provide our loved ones with dignified and compassionate end-of-life care right here in our community. In fact, nearly 30 individuals have already received that care since the unit began a phased opening in January.

I want to again take this opportunity to thank all those who contributed to this collective accomplishment, including many people across Nova Scotia Health; the dedicated members of the South Shore Hospice Palliative Care Society; staff, volunteers, and donors to the South Shore Health Foundation; and the ongoing efforts of the Fishermen's Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

Meet our newest member, the South Shore Hospice Palliative Care Society!

The South Shore Hospice Palliative Care Society was incorporated in 2019, by a group of citizens with vision for quality and compassionate end-of-life care for the residents of Lunenburg and Queens Counties. Through the generosity of their donors and in partnership with the Nova Scotia Health Palliative Care Services team, they support and promote compassionate care for individuals and their loved ones who are living with a life-limiting illness.
