The first school in West Northfield was recorded in 1841 and served as both school and church. Once a church was built in 1858, the school was either moved or a new one was built. By 1949 this one-room school held 30-40 Primary to Grade 10 pupils. Students wanting to take Grade 11 or 12 had to go to Bridgewater or Lunenburg. The teacher in 1949 was Vera Bruhm and common student surnames were: Meisner, Veinot, Rhodenizer, Langille, Dauphinee, Sartie, Knox, Oickle, Legge, Wentzell and Bruhm. This school operated until West Northfield Elementary Consolidated School opened in September 1962. Following two one-room schools built in Riverport in 1820 and 1866, and a two-room school in 1886, this impressive four-room school was built in Riverport in 1905. The school housed students from Primary to Grade 11 in three classrooms, with the fourth occupied by the I.O.F.F. Lodge. After a Consolidated Elementary School was built in Bayport in 1967, the old Riverport School became the Riverport and District Community Centre which exists today. Next in our series on Lunenburg County Schools is Blockhouse. According to info in "Recipes and Memories 1753-1994" produced by the Ladies Auxiliary Blockhouse Volunteer Fire Department, "The first school was located upstairs in the home of Harold Ernst...". Students were then moved to the structure known as the 'Old Blacksmith Shop' until a 'new' school was built in 1888. 'Old Blockhouse School' served the community for decades until the Blockhouse Consolidated School was built in 1962. Thanks for the great response to our first school profile. Next up is "Chester Elementary", built circa 1902. According to info in the "History of Chester 1759 1967", compiled by the Chester Branch of Women's Institute of Nova Scotia, the school also had grades 9 to 11 until 1962. It then continued in operation until 1980. Many people taught here over the years, including those in 66-67 with family names of Brownell, Jollimore, Mosher, Hume, Rost, Marshall, Nauss, Schnare, Houghton, Baker and principal A. H. Marshall. A first for Chester was the teaching of Domestic Science, when apparently the women of Chester banded together to raise money and equip a room in the school for the teaching of this important subject.
