What IS it that makes our senior parents so incredibly stubborn when it comes to letting us arrange home support for them?
Daughters and sons - you are not alone. Just last week our calls included…
Case 1 - A follow up call to a father’s daughter who could not convince him to accept help despite her best efforts. She called in a crisis and we made it happen. Mom had had multiple hospital stays in the past 3 months. So we helped, for a week, until dad outright refused. Again. Knowing the history, we called to follow up less than 3 weeks after that cancellation - her mom had already passed away.
Granted, she saw it coming and mom was not a healthy person, but did he really have to make it that hard on his daughter?
Case 2 - Another daughter called, who needs to stop being the only resource her dad calls. She had spent two weeks helping her mom while dad was in the hospital. She warned us that no other supports were allowed by him before that, and she had (smartly) positioned this to dad as a 1-month “trial” She told me he was very resistant and so I let her know that’s the majority of seniors in their 80’s - my 2 aunts, mom, dad, step mom, father-in-law included!!
You are not alone.
After the first successful visit, he told his daughter he was SHOCKED (and happy) with how our dementia-trained caregiver was able to take his wife out for a walk because he can’t get her to go and she LOVES walking.
And then he promptly told our Care Manager he’s planning to reduce the visit hours next week.
I strongly recommended to the daughter that she stand her ground and don’t let him off the hook in the first week. We're still in week 1.
And there you have it - independence, denial and fear, all wrapped up in one ball of attitude that makes daughters tear their hair out.
Why am I telling you this?
Because daughters and sons - sadly, you are going to have to be the grownups in these situations. And we are here to help.
When you call us on the verge of giving up, we are here for you. When dad calls to cancel, we know where it’s coming from. We know it means we have to help harder, with all our might - and give him all the reasons to learn to ACCEPT the right support…and do it again and again until we get there.
