There is exactly one health claim permitted for olive oil in Europe, and it comes with a number almost nobody sees.

Commission Regulation 432/2012 allows a producer to state that olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress. The condition is specific: the oil must contain at least 5 mg of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives, principally oleuropein complex and tyrosol, per 20 g of oil. That works out to roughly 250 mg per kilogram. Below that concentration the claim cannot legally be made.

Nothing obliges a bottle to declare where it falls. The claim is optional, so an oil that clears the threshold may advertise it, and an oil that does not simply says nothing. Absence of a number is not evidence of a low number. It is absence of information.

This matters because the grade on the front does not carry that information either. Extra virgin is defined by free acidity below 0.8 percent, mechanical extraction without heat or solvent, and a sensory panel finding zero defects. Those are meaningful quality criteria and they have nothing to do with phenolic concentration. Two oils can both be legitimately extra virgin and differ several fold in the compounds the health claim is written around.

What does reliably destroy them is refining. Oils sold as light or pure are refined, using heat and solvent treatment that strips colour, aroma, bitterness and phenolics together. Light in this context describes flavour and colour, not calories, which are identical to extra virgin. A refined oil is a reasonable neutral cooking fat and it is not what the olive oil literature is about.

Phenolic content in unrefined oil varies with olive variety, harvest timing, and how the oil has been stored. Early harvest fruit, picked green, yields the highest concentrations. Content declines with time in the bottle and with exposure to light and heat, which is why dark glass and a harvest date matter more than a best before date.

Two limits on how far to take this. The permitted claim covers protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress, a mechanistic endpoint, not cardiovascular events. And the practical difference between a moderate and a high phenolic oil at real intakes has not been resolved with hard outcomes.

The usable rule is short. Refined oil has essentially none of this, and the label word for it is light or pure. Among extra virgin oils, the ones that clear the threshold generally say so, often with a harvest date and a lab figure. And the bitter, peppery sting at the back of the throat is the phenolics themselves, which makes taste a rough but genuine instrument.

Choline is one of the few nutrients where the US population is genuinely under-consuming by intake. NHANES data show only 6.6% of US adults aged 19 and above meet the Adequate Intake (Wallace and Fulgoni, J Am Coll Nutr 2016). The shortfall is even larger in adolescents.

That matters because choline is not optional metabolism. It is the precursor for phosphatidylcholine (the major phospholipid in every cell membrane and the carrier that packages VLDL out of the liver), for the acetylcholine that runs cholinergic neurotransmission, and for betaine, a methyl donor that backstops the folate-dependent methylation system.

When you take choline out of human diets in controlled feeding studies, the consequences are not subtle. Fischer, da Costa et al. (Am J Clin Nutr 2007) fed 57 healthy adults a low-choline diet for up to 42 days. 77% of men and 80% of postmenopausal women developed fatty liver or muscle damage. Only 44% of premenopausal women did, because estrogen upregulates de novo phosphatidylcholine synthesis. Even at the current AI of 550 mg/day, six men in the study still developed organ dysfunction.

Niculescu et al. (Am J Clin Nutr 2007) showed that single-nucleotide polymorphisms in genes that interconvert choline, folate, and methyl pools modulate the requirement. People with variant alleles need more choline to avoid liver and muscle damage. The "AI" is a population average; individual requirement varies with genetics.

The food story is where the practical problem sits. Beef liver delivers 359 mg per 3-oz serving, but most people do not eat liver. Among foods people actually eat, one large egg at 147 mg is roughly twice the next-best common option (3 oz lean beef at 115 mg, salmon at 75 mg, chicken breast at 64 mg). Milk and most plant sources sit between 30 and 50 mg per serving. The math is not subtle: hitting 425 to 550 mg from non-egg foods alone requires deliberate planning around organ meats, fish, and legumes. Drop the eggs and the typical American diet falls well below the AI.

Two practical implications. First, the AI for choline is not aspirational. It is the dose calibrated against actual liver and muscle damage in controlled human feeding trials. Second, pregnant and lactating women have higher needs (450 and 550 mg/day) at a life stage where choline supports fetal brain development. The 2009-2012 NHANES data show pregnant women meeting the AI at rates similar to non-pregnant women, which is to say, rarely.
The "eggs are bad for cholesterol" advice removed the only convenient source of one of the few nutrients Americans actually run short on.

Why is sleep so important? Some of the main functions during sleep:

Chronic sleep deprivation has been linked with:

A question I ask almost every patient:

"How does your energy change throughout the day?"

When we're struggling with fatigue, our bodies are constantly giving us clues. The timing of your fatigue can often point us toward its underlying cause.

The person who's exhausted the moment they wake up may have a very different root cause than the person who hits a wall every afternoon.

Or the busy mom who's afraid to sit down on the couch at 5:00 pm because she knows she won't have the energy to get back up and make dinner.

Or the 34-year-old who's physically exhausted but finds her mind racing when her head finally hits the pillow at 11:00 pm.

Fatigue is your body's way of communicating that something is out of balance.

Micro and nanoplastics.

These topics are coming up more and more in the naturopathic conferences I'm attending. I won't scare you with the gory details, but just know that shellfish is the highest dietary source of microplastics, and avoid nylon tea bags (plastic mesh) at all costs.

A 2019 study was done and found one tea bag steeped in 95° F water for 5 minutes released 11.6 billion microplastic particles and 3.1 billion nanoplastic particles!

Fiber, probiotics, and antioxidants from polyphenols are your best bet at offsetting the damage from microplastics, and sopping up the excess, but ultimately reducing exposure is your best bet.

That means,: not drinking from plastic water bottles, bringing your own metal coffee mug to cafes, not drinking hot liquids through plastic lids, dumping the Tupperware if you haven't already, and using an air filter when you can't open windows.

Weight loss can be stubborn or tough at times. Other times its downright nonexistent. It can feel like the more effort we put in, the higher the scale creeps.

In past generations doctors would counsel their patients: "Just eat less and move more!" Luckily, we're decades past that advice.

I understand weight loss. There are many angles I approach it from. Usually the causes are both physiological and psychological in nature.

One of the biggest myths I see: "If I'm eating healthy, I should feel healthy."

But, not necessarily. I've had patients who do everything right with their diet, exercise, supplements, stress reduction, and more, but they're still struggling with bloating, fatigue, brain fog, rashes and joint pain.

Sometimes its not trying to make our diet even HEALTHIER (or eliminating more), sometimes it's:

-gut bacteria
-detox capabilities
-blood sugar regulation
-hormones
-constipation

Many women feel like they're developing anxiety in their 40's. And some of them are, but often this as a symptom of perimenopause.

Sometimes the anxiety is the first thing to show up...even years before periods become irregular.

Hints that this could be perimenopause:
-anxiety feels more "body-like" and less coming from true worries
-waking between 2-4am
-feeling panicky or sudden dread for no reason

Spoiler: it’s the pesticides. Researchers found that those living within a mile of golf courses have 126 percent higher risk of developing Parkinson’s disease than those who live more than six miles away, according to a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

Areas that shared drinking water supplies with water used near golf courses were the most greatly impacted, the study shows. Researchers believe this shows that the pesticides used on golf courses could contribute to the amount of Parkinson’s cases.

“The odds of PD were relatively constant within close proximity to a golf course and decreased linearly as distance increased; individuals living farther from a golf course had reduced odds of PD, decreasing relative to the distance from the nearest golf course,” the study explained.

Previous studies have already linked chemicals found in pesticides including paraquat and rotenone to neurodegeneration, according to the study.

“This isn’t about golf,” said Dr. Michael Okun, national medical adviser for the Parkinson’s Foundation. “It’s about pesticides, environmental exposures, and preventable risks hiding in plain sight.”
