You can be wired and completely depleted at the same time. That isn't a contradiction. It's two adrenal hormones moving in opposite directions.
Cortisol gets all the attention. But your adrenals also make DHEA, the counterbalance, the one tied to resilience, energy, libido, and recovery. Under chronic stress the body prioritizes cortisol, because we need cortisol to survive, and DHEA fades quietly beside it. So you're running hot on one and running dry on the other, and the part that erodes is your capacity to bounce back.
I describe DHEA as the 9pm laundry hormone. If your DHEA is in a really good position, it's 9 o'clock at night and you think, you know what, yeah, I can throw in a load of laundry. I still have something in the tank. When it's low, the tank is just empty, no matter how much you rest. DHEA sits on a full hormone panel, read against cortisol, not cortisol alone.
Save this for the panel conversation. If you're testing cortisol, DHEA belongs on the same page.
