I originally planned to host something for the International Day of Yoga on June 21.
But because June 21 is also National Indigenous Peoples’ Day, I kept coming back to the feeling that it would be incomplete to acknowledge a practice rooted in a culture outside my own without also acknowledging the Indigenous lands and communities we are practicing on here.
This gathering grew from that reflection.
The intention is not to offer a perfect answer or ask anyone to arrive with perfect understanding. It’s simply to create a space where people can participate more thoughtfully through movement, teachings, reflection, and shared experience.
The morning will begin with a welcome from a local Knowledge Keeper, helping ground participants in the land we are gathering on and the space we are entering together.
From there, we’ll move into a guided 108 sun salutation practice. In yoga, 108 is traditionally used to mark moments of transition and reflection. Participants are invited to move at their own pace throughout the practice, with teachings woven naturally into the morning. There is no expectation to complete all 108.
June 21 also marks the Summer Solstice, adding another layer of reflection around transition, seasonality, and awareness.
The gathering will close with an optional cedar brushing opportunity, and each participant will receive a locally harvested cedar bough to keep at their mat during practice and take home afterward.
You do not need prior yoga experience or a deep understanding of Reconciliation to attend.
This is simply an invitation to come listen, reflect, participate, and spend the morning in a space being held with care and greater context.
The gathering is intentionally limited to 30 participants to help keep the space personal and well held and I’m so excited to have donations from the local community to curate goodie bags for all attendees
Suggested donation is $30, with proceeds supporting local Indigenous initiatives including Elder support and youth programs.
June 21, 8am which has been graciously donated.
