Yoga nidra isn’t simply about getting more sleep.

It’s about creating the conditions for deep rest, nervous system recovery, and greater awareness.

I was recently quoted in on the growing interest in yoga nidra and its benefits, and I’m always encouraged to see these practices reaching a wider audience.

Take a read if you’re curious about the difference between yoga nidra, NSDR, and why both are resonating with so many people right now.

June 21 is the International Day of Yoga, but this year I found myself reflecting more deeply on what it means to practice something that comes from a culture and lineage outside of my own while also recognizing that it is National Indigenous Peoples’ Day here in Canada.

Yoga has given me so much, and I wanted to approach this day with more intention, awareness, and care.

That reflection became the foundation for what we’re creating on June 21.

I invite you to join us for In Good Relation: 108 Sun Salutations for National Indigenous Peoples’ Day from 8-10am

108 sun salutations are often practiced in yoga during solstices and seasonal transitions as a way to mark change with greater awareness and intention.⁣

While the practice is physically repetitive, the repetition itself carries meaning and purpose.⁣

Over time, the steady rhythm of movement and breath can create a different quality of attention. The practice becomes less about counting and more about noticing:⁣

* where the mind goes⁣
* how the body responds⁣
* what shifts when you stay present a little longer than usual⁣

For this Summer Solstice gathering, the 108 will be practiced in 12 rounds of 9, with intentional pauses throughout the morning to breathe, reflect, and reconnect before continuing.⁣

12 is often associated with solar cycles and the movement of the sun through the year⁣
9 is often connected to completion, integration, and the closing of a cycle⁣

108 itself appears in many different ways across the globe.⁣

Did you know that the outer circle of stones at Stonehenge measures exactly 108 feet? And is linked to Da Vinci’s 𝘝𝘪𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘷𝘪𝘢𝘯 𝘔𝘢𝘯. In his drawing the 5 pointed star (representing humans), inside a circle (representing a planet) we find 108 degrees staring back at us from every angle.⁣

The structure of the morning is intended to support participation and presence rather than performance.⁣

We’ll begin with slower guided rounds of a modified Sun Salutation A before gradually building into the larger practice. Participants are welcome to continue at that pace throughout the morning or move into a more dynamic rhythm if they choose.⁣

There is no expectation to complete all 108.⁣

This gathering is simply an invitation to explore what can happen when movement, breath, and reflection are given enough time and space to settle into rhythm together.⁣

“What’s happening now?”⁣

I first learnt this question in my yoga therapy training many years ago and it the question I constantly revisit over and over.⁣

It’s about being here now….⁣

Not yesterday.⁣
Not three months from now.⁣
Not in the version of my life I’m trying to control before I even arrive in it.⁣

Now.⁣

It asks….⁣

What do you notice in your body?⁣
What emotions are asking to be acknowledged?⁣
What beauty, tension, exhaustion, gratitude, grief, or joy exists in this exact moment?⁣

“Be here now” isn’t asking us to have it all figured out.⁣
It’s an invitation to be fully present in our own unique human experience instead of waiting for life to begin.⁣

Because life is already happening and if we aren’t present we might miss something really meaningful. Here. 🤍

I originally planned to host something for the International Day of Yoga on June 21.

But because June 21 is also National Indigenous Peoples’ Day, I kept coming back to the feeling that it would be incomplete to acknowledge a practice rooted in a culture outside my own without also acknowledging the Indigenous lands and communities we are practicing on here.

This gathering grew from that reflection.

The intention is not to offer a perfect answer or ask anyone to arrive with perfect understanding. It’s simply to create a space where people can participate more thoughtfully through movement, teachings, reflection, and shared experience.

The morning will begin with a welcome from a local Knowledge Keeper, helping ground participants in the land we are gathering on and the space we are entering together.

From there, we’ll move into a guided 108 sun salutation practice. In yoga, 108 is traditionally used to mark moments of transition and reflection. Participants are invited to move at their own pace throughout the practice, with teachings woven naturally into the morning. There is no expectation to complete all 108.

June 21 also marks the Summer Solstice, adding another layer of reflection around transition, seasonality, and awareness.

The gathering will close with an optional cedar brushing opportunity, and each participant will receive a locally harvested cedar bough to keep at their mat during practice and take home afterward.

You do not need prior yoga experience or a deep understanding of Reconciliation to attend.

This is simply an invitation to come listen, reflect, participate, and spend the morning in a space being held with care and greater context.

The gathering is intentionally limited to 30 participants to help keep the space personal and well held and I’m so excited to have donations from the local community to curate goodie bags for all attendees

Suggested donation is $30, with proceeds supporting local Indigenous initiatives including Elder support and youth programs.

June 21, 8am which has been graciously donated.

Can I be honest?

Sometimes it’s really hard to wear all the hats.

To hold the vision.
To make the decisions.
To answer the emails.
To support the people.
To create.
To lead.
To remember all the moving pieces while still trying to stay connected to yourself underneath it all.

And then sometimes life offers a small moment that pulls me back into this moment, this body, this breath.

A reminder that not everything needs to be optimized.
Not everything needs to perform well.
Not everything needs to be algorithm conducive.

Just like anything else in life, we get to decide what we need and when.

And today, I needed this.

The things you do for the people you love 🫶

Stepping out of my comfort zone and making a talking video to share this incredible hand-crocheted sweater my niece, Taylor, made me. Honestly though… she’s so talented and I couldn’t not share it. Check out her work and give her a follow while you are at it

If you’re heading to the this weekend, make sure you check out her little business and support her beautiful work. And if you’re lucky, maybe you can convince her to make one for you too.
