I was in Banff this weekend for the CFAS-ASRM joint business meeting. Great meeting by the way !
I got a chance to sneak in a hike at the end of the day Saturday.
I walked 30 min uphill in the heat just to get to bottom on Tunnel mountain trail.
I had 2 hrs ahead of me to reach the summit and I was already exhausted and short of breath.
I started my ascend questioning my life choices and cursing the decision to make that hike.
But then I saw people coming down the hike with that triumphant expression on their face and I told myself, “ I want that!”
So I did the mental work I do when I need to do hard things
1. I reviewed mental list of all the hard things I have already done: Moving to Canada, becoming a doctor , infertility, running a half marathon, starting a podcast, leading a top fertility clinic
2. I decided ahead of time what the story would look like. I wrote the ending I wanted . I almost wrote this post in my mind while I was making the climb.
3. I talked to my future self. I asked her what the view is like from up there and how it feels to have done it.
And just like that, one step at time I made it to the top.
I tell you this because whether it is a simple hike or the challenge of a lifetime these strategies have helped me again and again.
Now your turn, what are your strategies to accomplish hard things ?
