1️⃣ “I eventually said yes.”
Consent that’s pressured, guilted, or worn down isn’t freely given. Twenty no’s followed by one yes is still twenty no’s.
2️⃣ “I shouldn’t have been drunk/high.”
It is your right to want to get drunk or high. It is your right to choose what you put into your body. We also all have the right to be treated with respect and dignity as an absolute BASELINE, regardless of what we’ve ingested. Canada’s Criminal Code (Section 273) states that someone who is unconscious cannot consent, and that someone who is “incapable” (i.e. too intoxicated) also cannot consent.
3️⃣ “He was my boyfriend/partner/husband/friend.”
Many assaults are committed by someone the person knows. Saying no to a boyfriend is still a no.
4️⃣ “I went to his place/flirted/kissed him first.”
Agreeing to one thing isn’t agreeing to everything. Just because I agree to a shot of vodka, as an analogy, doesn’t mean I’ve agreed to someone pouring the whole fu***ng bottle down my throat.
5️⃣ “I agreed to some stuff, then changed my mind about other stuff.”
Consent is ongoing and you can withdraw consent at any point. Sticking to my drug analogy: just because I’m cool with drinking doesn’t mean I’m automatically cool with doing co***ne. At the VERY least, I’d expect that someone ask if I want any before shoving it up my nose.
We should ALL be able to live in a world where no matter how drunk, stoned, promiscuous, flirtatious, WHATEVER we are, we have a right to not be sexually assaulted. Seriously, the bar is on the fu***ng ground.
