This year's World Physiotherapy Day theme highlights the important role physiotherapy and physical activity play in the prevention, management, and rehabilitation of cardiovascular disease and stroke, while also recognizing the positive impact physiotherapists have on health and well-being every day.

🔧 Tools of the Trade: Balance Disc

A balance disc may look simple, but it's a versatile rehabilitation tool that helps improve stability, coordination, strength, and confidence in movement.

Physiotherapists use balance discs to challenge your balance in a safe, controlled way while strengthening the muscles that support your ankles, knees, hips, and core. They can be used during rehabilitation after an injury, to help prevent falls, improve athletic performance, or simply enhance everyday movement.

Whether you're recovering from an injury or working to improve your balance and mobility, a balance disc can be an effective part of your personalized physiotherapy program.

Every rehabilitation journey is unique. A physiotherapist can assess your needs and determine which tools and exercises are best suited to help you reach your goals.

Feeling Dizzy? Physiotherapy May Be Able to Help.

Dizziness and balance problems can affect your confidence, mobility, and quality of life—but they don't have to become your new normal.

Many conditions that cause dizziness, vertigo, or balance difficulties can be assessed and treated by a physiotherapist through a personalized rehabilitation program designed to improve stability, reduce symptoms, and help you move with confidence again.

Signs to watch for include:
✔️ Dizziness when turning your head
✔️ Feeling unsteady while walking
✔️ Vertigo when rolling over in bed
✔️ Balance problems affecting everyday activities

If you're experiencing these symptoms, a physiotherapist can assess the underlying cause and develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Better balance starts with the right assessment.

💪 Movement Monday: Modified Side Plank

The Modified Side Plank is a great way to build core strength, stability and balance while also working your hips and shoulders.

With your knees bent and your elbow positioned under your shoulder, engage your core and lift your hips. Keep your body aligned and avoid letting your hips sag or rotate forward or backward.

Move with control and focus on good form throughout the exercise.

💻⏸️ Screen Breaks Matter

Back-to-school means more time spent on computers for homework, research, and studying. While screens are an important part of learning, staying in one position for too long can lead to stiffness, fatigue, and reduced focus.

A simple movement break every 30–60 minutes can make a big difference.

✔️ Stand up and move around
✔️ Stretch your neck, shoulders, and back
✔️ Walk for a minute or two
✔️ Stay hydrated throughout the day

Healthy screen habits can help students stay comfortable, focused, and ready to learn all school year long.

⚽🏃‍♀️ Back-to-School Sports: Train Smarter. Perform Better.

As students head back to school, sports teams are gearing up for a new season. Whether it's soccer, volleyball, football, basketball, cross-country, or another school sport, preparing your body is just as important as practicing your skills.

Physiotherapy isn't just for recovering from injuries—it can help student athletes:

✅ Improve performance
✅ Help prevent injuries
✅ Recover faster between practices and games
✅ Return to play safely after an injury

Working with a physiotherapist can help identify movement patterns, improve strength and mobility, and keep athletes performing at their best throughout the season.

A healthy season starts with smart preparation.

💚 Movement Monday: Dead Bug

Looking for a simple exercise to improve your core strength and stability?

The Dead Bug is an excellent exercise that helps strengthen your core, improve coordination, and support your lower back—all while encouraging controlled, purposeful movement.

Benefits of the Dead Bug:
✅ Builds core stability
✅ Improves coordination
✅ Supports lower back health
✅ Promotes better movement control

Remember to move slowly, keep your core engaged, and gently press your lower back into the floor throughout the exercise. Focus on quality of movement rather than speed or range.

If you're experiencing ongoing back pain or would like guidance on the right exercises for your needs, a physiotherapist can help.

Balance Matters

Good balance plays an important role in staying active, confident, and independent at every stage of life. Whether you're walking the dog, climbing stairs, gardening, or simply moving around your home, maintaining good balance can help you enjoy everyday activities with greater confidence.

Improving your balance can help:

✅ Reduce your risk of falls
✅ Build confidence in your movements
✅ Strengthen your core muscles
✅ Support healthy aging and independence

The good news? Balance can be improved with regular activity, strength training, and exercises designed to challenge your stability safely.

If you're feeling unsteady, have experienced a fall, or want to improve your balance, a physiotherapist can assess your needs and develop a personalized plan to help you move with confidence.
