How Long Does Fascia Take to Release? ⏳
One of the most common questions I hear is:
“How long do I need to hold a Myofascial Release technique?”
The answer:
Longer than most people think.
Fascia is a living, three-dimensional connective tissue that adapts to sustained, gentle pressure—not force.
With the John F. Barnes Myofascial Release Approach, we don’t push through tissue or force a stretch. We patiently wait for the body to respond.
✨ The first 1–2 minutes often allow the tissue and nervous system to begin settling and only effecting the elastic component of the musculature.
✨ Around 3–5 minutes, many restrictions begin to soften as the fascia starts to lengthen and reorganize.
✨ Deeper, more chronic restrictions may require 5 minutes or longer, depending on the individual, the area being treated, and how safe the nervous system feels.
This isn’t about watching a stopwatch.
It’s about listening.
Every body has its own timing.
When fascia releases, you may notice:
💜 A feeling of warmth
💜 Softening or “melting” under the hands
💜 A deep breath or sigh
💜 Gentle unwinding or spontaneous movement
💜 A sense of calm as the nervous system shifts toward regulation
Healing cannot be rushed. It’s why I hold techniques longer and do less techniques in an hour. Less techniques and longer holds.
Sometimes the greatest change comes from slowing down enough to allow the body to do what it has been trying to do all along.
Your body already knows how to heal. Sometimes it simply needs enough time, safety, and space to let go.
