My answer, to a question a lady had on a group I am in. Her shoulder is tight across her Right shoulder blade. Mandi of you will have been on the table/massage treatment side of one of my teaching, during your massage sessions:

“No. Those are two of the Rotator Cuff muscles. They are commonly hypertonic on the Right Scapula.

You are most likely holding your shoulder in an Interiorly Rotated (shortened in the front) at the Head of the Humerus (upper arm none), at the Glenohumeral (shoulder) Joint.

Shoulder(s) Forward is a commonly seen postural issue as people age, work related, or due to injury.

It is absolutely worth addressing because it often leads to a number of different Repetitive Strain Injuries, from the shoulder to the tips of your fingers. Truthfully, in my opinion, it is often a precursor to just about every RSI that I have seen and have treated over 14 years.

1. Lengthen the muscles that are over-firing. They are not moving as they should. They are pumps that indirectly move blood and Lymphatic Fluid through your body.

Warm up your body with some gentle movement. Progress it in some gentle stretching.

2. Then, follow it with strengthening up what is weak, inhibited or both.

Look at exercises to strengthen your Back Extensors, Abdominal Wall, Pelvic Floor and the Phasic (think powerhouse) muscles on your back. Make sure add in in your Gluteals. With all due respect, we walk upright because of our big buttocks, therefore, making sure that they are strong, will keep you standing and sitting taller.

The muscles on the front of your Anterior (front( chest wall are Postural Muscles. They shorten when they are misfiring. They pull your GH Joint, rolling inward, towards your Sternum and Manubrium (breastbone).

Strengthening these will be the real and definitive change that will decrease your pain level, get you moving better and more relaxed. “
