Monument Lettering Styles for Inscriptions

Etched in stone is the old saying and careful thought on monument lettering styles and wording is always recommended. Fixing a mistake after the fact is difficult and costly.

Before deciding on what wording to actually put on a monument, a lettering or carving style needs to be chosen. This decision will help with the readability of what’s to be written on a monument. Certain lettering styles are more legible depending on the colour of the stone.

For light shaded colours, which typically are light greys and pinks, the recommended lettering style is ‘V-sunk in a Panel’. With this style, a panel is created by blasting the polish off the monument and then the lettering is carved into the panel. The shadows made by the lettering contrast the lighter back panel, increasing readability.

With darker pigmented monuments such as dark greys and blacks, there are more lettering styles which can be used. In addition to V-sunk in a panel, a ‘Raised Style’ can be used where a deep panel is blasted away from the monument and lettering is achieved by not blasting away the letters, leaving the polished surface intact. The letters are ‘raised’ from the background. Another style that can be used with darker coloured monuments is ‘engraved’ where lettering which is about the width of a fingertip is carved into the surface polish of the monument.

The monument lettering process is about light and how the lettering you choose contrasts the background it is placed on. Consult with us to make sure decisions about monument lettering reflect best practices so that your monument lettering project produces the best possible outcome.

You need Good Advice and We’re Here to Help

Advice is one thing out there that whether you ask for it or not, you’re going to receive it. Everyone has an opinion on most subjects and are only too happy to share their point of view.

Remember that care needs to be taken when making choices about matters which have an impact on many people. Relying solely on the advice of individuals who lack experience and know-how, in a certain subject area, can create negative consequences.

People who can provide good advice are typically referred to as subject-matter experts. They possess significant knowledge and expertise in a chosen field and can flush out key considerations in the decision making process. They’ve seen it all… and their practical experience can be relied upon to make optimal choices.

When making funeral planning decisions, seek out those who are professionally qualified to offer insightful advice. This person may be your local funeral director, local clergy or other persons who have significant experience in matters of death or dying. Avoid relying on the hearsay of those who offer only anecdotal advice. Your personal situation may differ from theirs.

Finding an expert is the first step. Finding someone who is able to identify with your personal and unique needs is the second step. They must be sympathetic to your goals and mindset, and be able to fulfill the personal and functional aspects of your requests.

If you have funeral planning questions or need advice or information, please contact us. We’re here to help.

Fascinating Rituals from around the World
The Torajan Funeral

In the region of Toraja in Indonesia, indigenous peoples have and continue to practice the most intricate of funeral customs. When a Torajan dies, the cultural beliefs of this society include the view that the spirit does not immediately leave the body.

The deceased is preserved and often stays at home for an extended period of time which could be weeks or months, and in some instances years. They “live” alongside family members and are thought to be sick or asleep. They are still given meals and are very much a part of family life.

It is only when they receive funeral rites that they are considered to have died. Torajans host extremely elaborate funeral customs. Entire towns and villages are invited and ceremonies last more than a week. The body is placed in a vessel which is in the shape of a ship, which is placed in a central location. This is considered the time of mourning.

Bulls are very much a part of these ceremonies. Attendees witness actual bull fights where wagers can be placed. Following these competitions, they are slaughtered and their meat is cooked in preparation for a meal for everyone. Symbolically, the heart of the bull accompanies the heart of the deceased into the spirit world.

All of these efforts are to ensure that the status of the deceased is maintained in the afterlife and to bring honour to the dead.

At the end of these funeral rituals the body is brought to a tomb in an elaborate procession. Then an effigy is placed at the entrance to the tomb to watch over the remains.

The rituals do not end at this time though. Each August, in a ceremony called Ma’Nene, the family returns to the tomb and exhumes the deceased. They then place their beloved in new garments, wash them and make repairs to the casket.
