Friends! 💕 Our province is a beautiful region, but Nova Scotia frequently reports the highest incidence rate in Canada with lyme disease, with rates often over 10 times higher than the national average.
Lyme disease in ticks IS more prevalent than EVER before, which poses a SERIOUS risk to both pets and people. Dogs who love hiking, backyard exploring, or even quick walks around the neighborhood are at risk of exposure. Ticks..are..EVVVERYwhere. 🪲⚠️
Why tick prevention matters:
✔️ Symptoms of Lyme disease can be subtle at first..lameness, fever, lethargy.
✔️ If not caught and treated early, dogs oftentimes can face fatal kidney damage (Lyme nephritis), or rare neurological and cardiac issues.
✔️ Prevention is farrrrr easier (and safer) than treatment.
What you can do:
🐾 Keep your pet on a vet-recommended tick preventative
🐾 Check your dog thoroughly after outdoor time (ears, paws, underbelly!)
🐾 Avoid tall grasses and wooded areas when possible.
Even indoor pets aren’t completely safe. Ticks can hitch a ride inside on clothing or other animals.
