Turn everyday moments into an easy language game! 😊

Try I Spy with your child and take turns choosing something to describe.

🗣 “I spy something that is soft.”
🗣 “I spy something that is red.”
🗣 “I spy something we use to eat.”

As your child plays, they’re practicing describing objects, learning new vocabulary, listening to clues, and putting information together.

Phonemic awareness is an important building block for learning to read.📖

It’s the ability to hear and work with the individual sounds in spoken words.

For example, a child might learn that the word “sun” has three sounds: /s/,/u/, and/n/. They can then begin to blend those sounds or identify the first or last sound they hear.👂

These skills develop through listening and talking before children are expected to read and spell independently.

By 18 months, many toddlers are using a growing number of words and starting to combine words to communicate what they want, notice, and experience.🗣

One simple way to support language development is to talk about what your child is already doing. During play, mealtimes, or getting dressed, name what you see and add a few words to what your child says.

For example, if your child says “car,” you might say, “Fast car!” or “The car is going!”
These everyday interactions give children repeated opportunities to hear and practice new words and early sentences.

Here’s a simple way to take a sentence-building activity one step further.👇

Once your child has created a sentence, have them draw a picture to match it.

It might seem like a small extra step, but it gives them another way to think about what they’ve written. Does the picture match the sentence? Did they include all the important details? Can they explain what’s happening?🤔

Then read the sentence together and let them tell you about their picture.

You can ask simple questions like:

🗣 “What happened first?”
🗣 “Why did that happen?”
🗣 “What do you think will happen next?”
🗣 “Can you tell me more about your picture?”

It’s a nice little activity for working on comprehension, vocabulary, sentence structure, and expressive language without turning the afternoon into a formal lesson.

Try this simple sentence-building activity the next time you have a few extra minutes. All you need are some index cards or scraps of paper and a mix of words.

Write down a few nouns, verbs, adjectives, and simple connecting words like “and,” “but,” and “because.” Spread them out and let your child choose a few to build a sentence.

Start simple, then see if they can add a little more. Maybe “The dog ran” becomes “The little dog ran across the yard because it was excited.”

You’re working on vocabulary, sentence structure, grammar, and language organization, but to your child, it just feels like putting words together.

Sometimes the best way to support your child’s speech development is to listen simply.🗣

When your child is sharing a story or telling you something important, focus on the message first, not just the sounds they are still learning.

Constantly correcting speech errors can sometimes make children feel self-conscious and less willing to talk. The more comfortable they feel communicating, the more opportunities they have to practice and grow.

Sometimes it looks like sounds being hard to say clearly, getting stuck on words, or needing extra time to get thoughts out. Other times it can be about understanding language or putting words together.

There isn’t one single reason this happens. Every child is different, and that’s why looking at the full picture really matters.
