How long does speech therapy take? 🤔

This is a question many families have, but there is no single timeline that applies to everyone.

Some people may notice changes quickly, while others may need more time to build and strengthen new communication skills.

Progress depends on many factors, including the goals being worked on, the frequency of therapy, and opportunities to practice skills in everyday life.

Speech therapy is personalized to each person’s needs, with goals that grow and change as progress is made.

Every step forward helps build stronger communication skills over time.

Speech and language challenges can look different for every person😊

Some people may have difficulty being understood, while others may struggle to find the right words, express their thoughts, or use speech smoothly.

These challenges can show up in different ways, including:
🗣 Speech sounds that are difficult to understand
🗣 Stuttering or repeating sounds and words
🗣 Delayed language development
🗣 Difficulty expressing ideas clearly

Speech and language differences can happen for many reasons, including developmental differences, neurological conditions, or changes following an injury.

Our team can help identify what may be contributing and provide strategies that are tailored to each person’s needs.

Why does speech therapy often look like play?🗣️

Play is one of the most natural ways children learn and develop new skills.

During play-based activities, children have opportunities to practice communication skills like taking turns, learning new vocabulary, following directions, making choices, and expressing their thoughts.

Speech-language pathologists use these meaningful moments to support communication development in a way that feels engaging and connected to a child’s everyday life.

When children are comfortable and involved, they are more likely to participate, practice, and build confidence.😁

🗣 Fun fact: Babies are learning language before they ever say their first word.

Long before a child says “mama” or “more,” they are already building communication skills.

Babies learn through listening, watching faces, taking turns, making sounds, and responding to the people around them.

Those early interactions are the foundation for later speech and language development!🥰

Sometimes knowing what you want to say and being able to say it clearly are two different things.👉

For some children, certain speech sounds can be difficult to produce. This may happen because coordinating the movements of the lips, tongue, jaw, and mouth takes extra practice.

A child may know the word they want to say, but the sounds don’t always come out the way they intended.

A speech-language pathologist can help identify what may be making speech sounds challenging and provide strategies to support clearer communication. This may include practicing sound placement, building awareness of how sounds are made, and using supportive techniques that help children develop new skills.🗣

With time and practice, children can become more confident in expressing themselves and being understood.

Speech therapy should feel like a positive experience, not something a child has to push through.🗣

It’s completely normal to wonder how your child will respond, especially if they are hesitant in new environments. That’s why we take a gentle, child-centred approach from the very beginning. Sessions are designed to feel engaging, supportive, and tailored to each child’s personality, interests, and comfort level.

Progress doesn’t come from pressure. It comes from building trust, creating a sense of safety, and celebrating small steps along the way.🥰

When children feel comfortable, they are more willing to try, learn, and grow in their communication.

Passing a hearing test doesn’t always mean listening feels easy.👂

Hearing tests measure how well the ears detect sound, but they don’t always show how the brain processes and makes sense of what we hear. For some people, that’s where things can feel difficult.

Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) can affect how clearly and efficiently spoken information is understood, especially in everyday situations.

This might look like struggling to follow conversations in busy places, needing more time to process what was said, feeling mentally drained after long discussions, or relying on subtitles or repetition to keep up.

These experiences are often misunderstood, but they are more common than people realize.

The good news is that an APD assessment can help identify what is contributing to these challenges. From there, strategies and supports can be tailored to make listening feel more manageable and less exhausting.

If any of this sounds familiar, our team is here to help answer your questions!💜

Every person’s communication journey looks a little different.🗣️

Some children begin talking later, some have difficulty being understood, and others may find certain parts of communication more challenging.

Speech and language differences can happen for many reasons, and they can look different from person to person. What matters most is understanding what a child needs and finding the right support.🥰

With the right strategies and guidance, children can build their communication skills and confidence over time.

Speech therapy should feel like a place where children can be themselves.🗣

Every child learns differently, which is why therapy is never one-size-fits-all. We meet children where they are and build activities around their interests, strengths, and goals.😊

For many children, that means learning through play, conversation, and activities that feel natural, not like extra work.

The biggest progress often happens when skills from therapy become part of everyday life. That’s why we work with families to share strategies that can be used at home, during routines, and in everyday conversations.

Small moments add up, and every step helps children become more confident communicators.

If you have questions about whether speech therapy could support your child, our team is here to help.💜
