What is trauma-informed care, and why is it such an important part of doula work?

As doulas, we are invited into some of the most vulnerable moments in a person's life. Pregnancy, birth, fertility journeys, loss, and postpartum experiences can all bring up emotions and memories that are deeply personal.

Trauma-informed care is an approach that recognizes that anyone we support may have experienced trauma, whether we know about it or not.

It asks us to lead with respect and compassion in all that we do.
Trauma-informed care isn't about becoming a therapist or asking clients to share their history. Rather it’s creating an environment where clients feel safe and in control of their own decisions. It's making sure people understand procedures before they happen, gaining consent before offering hands-on support, and respecting boundaries.

One of the most important things we teach at Doula School is that every interaction matters. Even the small ones. Maybe even ESPECIALLY the small ones.

The way we communicate. How we listen. It’s all so crucial.

There are amazing statistics about how having a doula during your birthing time can help reduce the risk of interventions drastically!

Doulas cannot guarantee birth outcomes, no one can.

However, research shows that working with a doula reduces the likelihood of a c-section.

Some c-sections are absolutely medically indicated. But based on our high c-section rates, we know that many are not medically necessary.

A meta-analysis published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology stated:

"Pregnant patients supported by doulas services are 68% less likely to undergo CD than those receiving standard prenatal care, more likely to have IAVD, and have no difference in epidural rates. Additional research is needed to elucidate the impact of doula services on neonatal outcomes. Nonetheless, doula support services represent a promising intervention to decrease the high rates of caesarean section in the United States."

A 68% reduced risk of c-section is absolutely statistically significant. It means compared to those without doula support, they are less likely to have a c-section (some will still have medically necessary ones or even opt for elective).

When a c-section does occur even with doula support, many parents report having a better understanding of why it became necessary AND feel more like they were active participants in the decision-making process.

Is this.... MENOPAUSE?!?!?!

There are some real "fun" symptoms of peri/menopause that some people don't know.
The body is a wild thing!

A little thank you to everyone,

My silly menopause journal/coloring book has 3 sales now!

And I have 8 members in my weekly meno support group!

That doesn't seem like much, but when you make something yourself and put it into the world, you never know what to expect.

I'm trying to support others while trying to support me too!

I appreciate all the love so much ❤️

The last 3 years have been brutal for me mentally and physically (2 surgeries in 14 months, surgical menopause, mental break downs, career changes, friends and family passing etc)

I've been meeting new people, doing things I would never normally do, taking major risks, taking lots of courses and letting myself really take in the love I'm given - which really makes me want to help others even more.

Things in my mind have shifted lately (some med changes are helping too!) and my mental health is starting to calm and be in a more peaceful and grateful place. I can say that working at the Eel Ground Health Centre (it will be a year this month!) has literally made me feel like ME for the first time in over 10 years. I've never felt like I belonged somewhere like I do there ❤️

If I tell you I love you. I mean it. 100%.

Thank you thank you thank you all for just being in my life!

Ps - Buy my book here 😀

Always ❤️

Sometimes I overwhelm myself with reaching out to others a bit too much, and don't reach out to myself, lol.

But if you know me, you might have gotten a random "you popped into my head" message to check-in.

I just always want people to know that they are thought of and cared for ❤️

Yes!!!!!
You already have the power. I just help you recognize it 💪💪💪💪💪

This is a very important lesson as a doula. I see a lot of language around having “empowered birth experiences” AND YES! I do believe if women walked away from their birth feeling all the magic and power that can come then the patriarchy would crumble… but in the meantime… it is not me as your doula empowering you. I get to witness your power. And it’s freaking amazing.

Hopefully we have worked together so you feel educated and confident in your decisions. Hopefully we worked on getting you and your team in a great headspace. Hopefully we have prepared you for postpartum so that it will restful and nourishing. Hopefully your partner also feels so stoked on witnessing and supporting your power and surrender.

This philosophy is foundational in our Preparing for Parenthood online childbirth education class. You can find it on our website under the For Parents tab.

Better births. For everyone. Everywhere.

Let’s gooooooo
