Dry needling vs acupuncture: more overlap than you might think. 🪡

Both use fine needles, and there can be substantial overlap between dry needling and trigger-point acupuncture. The clinical approach and practitioner’s training can still differ.

For someone dealing with neck pain, shoulder pain or back pain, the useful question is: “Could this be appropriate for me?”

At Redux Movement in Mississauga, we start by assessing your symptoms, movement and goals. Medical acupuncture may be included when appropriate, alongside hands-on care and rehabilitation.

If pain is interrupting your workouts, workday or sleep, start with an assessment to understand your options and plan your next steps.

Shoulder pain that keeps getting better… then comes right back when you work out?

For two years, this shoulder case involved recurring pain, morning stiffness, and difficulty reaching overhead.

Even everyday movements, like putting on a shirt, had become uncomfortable.

Previous care included two steroid injections and 10 chiropractic visits. Despite these efforts, symptoms continued to interfere with training and daily activities.

During our assessment, we examined the rotator cuff, neck, and serratus anterior — an important muscle involved in shoulder blade control.

Treatment included medical acupuncture with electrical stimulation, dry needling for myofascial trigger points, and an individualized shoulder-strengthening program.

Following the second visit, reassessment showed improved overhead movement. At the six-week follow-up, the improvement had been maintained, with no pain reported.

Persistent shoulder pain isn't always just about the shoulder joint itself.

Understanding what contributes to restricted movement and recurring flare-ups is an important part of building a rehabilitation plan.

If shoulder pain keeps interrupting your workouts or everyday activities, a detailed assessment can help identify your next steps.

The accident was over. But the symptoms were just beginning.

Headaches. Dizziness. Light sensitivity. Neck pain. And discomfort extending into the arm.

For this patient, recovering from a motor vehicle accident involved more than just addressing his concussion.

After receiving medical clearance, we focused on assessing and treating the cervical and musculoskeletal components of his symptoms.

Our approach included medical acupuncture targeting the upper cervical region, including GB20, alongside distal acupuncture points to address his arm pain.

**What did he report following treatment?**

→ Approximately 50% less pain

→ Significantly improved neck mobility

→ Less frequent headaches

These were his individual reported improvements, not a guarantee of results.

One thing I always emphasize: the location of your pain doesn't always tell the whole story.

Concussion symptoms and cervical spine dysfunction can overlap. Understanding how these systems interact is an important part of developing an individualized rehabilitation plan.

At Redux Movement in Mississauga, we believe in assessment-first care, clinical reasoning, and treating the individual - not just chasing symptoms.

Two cortisone shots. Years of knee pain. No relief.

He tried massage, TENS, icing, pain creams, and personal training. His knee pain continued getting worse, especially in the morning and while walking.

He was even waiting for a consultation about surgery.

But our assessment revealed something important.

**His hip appeared to be a major contributor to the pain he was feeling in his knee.**

After addressing the hip-related issues, we focused on the quadriceps and adductor muscles during his second treatment.

His reported progress after two visits? **Approximately 40% improvement.**

Knee pain isn't always just about the knee.

Long hours at work. Persistent neck pain. And the feeling that you’ve already tried everything.

When neck pain keeps returning, the answer isn’t always another generic treatment.

At Redux Movement, care starts with understanding **your symptoms, your work demands, your movement, and what you’ve already tried.**

For this patient, the session included **medical acupuncture, Dolphin Neurostim, and cupping** as part of an individualized approach based on their presentation.

Because treatment shouldn’t just be a collection of techniques.

**Your story matters. Your assessment matters. And your care should reflect both.**

If neck pain is affecting your work, sleep, training, or everyday life, start with an assessment.

Pain isn’t always as simple as treating the spot that hurts.

At Redux Movement, premium care means taking the time to understand **why a muscle may be tight, overloaded, painful, or not functioning the way it should** — instead of automatically treating symptoms in isolation.

In this session, treatment included **dry needling of the upper trapezius** along with **muscle stimulation to the biceps** as part of a more complete approach to the neck, shoulder and arm.

The goal isn’t to use more techniques.

It’s to use the **right treatment, for the right reason, based on what we find during your assessment.**

That may include:
• Dry needling / medical acupuncture
• Neuromuscular stimulation
• Hands-on treatment
• Movement and strength assessment
• Progressive rehabilitation

Because when pain keeps returning, there may be more to assess than just the painful area.

**Assessment first. Evidence-informed treatment. Progressive rehabilitation.**

An ankle sprain can involve more than just the painful ligament.

In this treatment, we’re looking at the **ATFL — one of the most commonly injured ligaments in a lateral ankle sprain — but we’re also looking beyond the site of pain.**

Treatment may include targeted medical acupuncture and electrical stimulation around the ankle, along with the neural structures that help influence ankle and foot function.

Here, we’re working around the **common fibular nerve and deep fibular nerve** as part of a broader approach to restoring comfortable movement and function.

Because sometimes the best way to approach ankle pain is to assess the entire system — not just where it hurts.

Does the **front of your shoulder hurt when you bench press, shoulder press, push, lift, or reach overhead?**

This patient was dealing with pain around the **anterior deltoid/front of the shoulder**, especially when the shoulder was loaded during pressing movements.

Part of the treatment involved **medical acupuncture** to help address pain sensitivity and muscular tension around the shoulder.

But here’s the important part:

What you’re seeing in this video was only about **50% of the treatment**.

The other half was figuring out why the shoulder was becoming irritated in the first place — assessing movement, testing how the shoulder tolerated load, and building a plan to help it handle pressing and everyday activity again.

At Redux Movement in Mississauga, treatment isn’t built around one technique.

**Assessment first. Targeted treatment. Progressive rehabilitation.**

If shoulder pain is affecting your workouts, work, sleep, lifting, pushing, or everyday movement, start with an assessment.

Knee pain in Mississauga? Sometimes the knee is only part of the picture.

In this case, his pain was around the knee — but when we looked more closely, his hip, thigh, pelvis and lower back also gave us important information about how the knee was moving and being loaded.

Testing the re**us femoris reproduced the pain he recognized around the knee, so we didn’t simply treat the painful spot.

We also worked through the lower back and surrounding lumbopelvic region to influence how the entire area was moving together — then reassessed to see what actually changed.

That’s a big part of how we approach knee pain treatment at Redux Movement in Mississauga.

We look at pain as a system, not an isolated symptom.

Your assessment may include the knee, hips, pelvis, lower back, strength, mobility and movement depending on what we find.

If you’re dealing with recurring knee pain from the gym, sports, work, squatting, stairs or everyday activity, it may be worth looking beyond the painful area.

Lower back pain doesn't always mean the lumbar spine is the only area that needs to be assessed.

Restrictions or movement problems elsewhere can change how your lower back is loading and moving.

At Redux Movement in Mississauga, we start with an assessment to understand what may be contributing to your pain before building your treatment and rehab plan.
