🚨🇹🇷 URGENT ISTANBUL WEATHER & TRAVEL SAFETY ALERT
October 15, 2026 | Severe Flooding & Further Storms Forecast
If you’re currently in Istanbul, travelling there for surgery, recovering from a procedure or preparing to fly home, please take a moment to read this.
Istanbul has experienced serious flooding following torrential rainfall on October 14, and another period of heavy rain is forecast for October 16–17.
Sadly, lives have been lost, and significant flooding has affected roads, buildings and transportation throughout parts of the city.
My thoughts are with the families affected and everyone dealing with the aftermath.
🌧️ WHAT’S HAPPENING?
Heavy rainfall has caused:
⚠️ Flooded roads and underpasses
⚠️ Vehicles stranded in rising water
⚠️ Damage to homes and businesses
⚠️ Major traffic delays and transportation disruption
⚠️ Flight diversions and travel complications
⚠️ Continuing risks of landslides and further flooding
This is a genuine weather emergency, not simply an ordinary rainy day in Istanbul.
📅 WHAT’S COMING NEXT?
According to Türkiye’s General Directorate of Meteorology:
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16
Another period of heavy rainfall is expected to begin in the morning, particularly affecting Istanbul’s European side and northern districts.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 17
Rainfall is expected to intensify and affect the wider Istanbul area.
Authorities are warning of further flooding, lightning, landslides and transportation disruption.
The current official warning extends through Saturday night.
Please remember that forecasts can change, and conditions may differ significantly between neighbourhoods.
✈️ TRAVELLING TO ISTANBUL FOR SURGERY?
If you’re arriving in the next few days:
✅ Check your flight directly with your airline before leaving home.
✅ Confirm your airport pickup and hotel arrangements.
✅ Allow extra time for transfers, particularly if roads are affected.
✅ Keep essential medication and important documents in your carry-on luggage.
✅ Keep your phone charged and have your hospital’s contact information readily available.
✅ Do not attempt to cross flooded roads or underpasses, even if other vehicles are doing so.
If your flight is delayed or diverted, contact your surgical coordinator immediately so your medical appointments and hospital admission can be reviewed.
🏥 ALREADY IN ISTANBUL RECOVERING FROM SURGERY?
This is especially important.
If you’ve recently undergone a tummy tuck, facelift, rhinoplasty, breast surgery, bariatric procedure or another operation, please avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather.
Your recovery may already involve fatigue, reduced mobility, pain medication and an increased need for assistance.
A few additional precautions:
💛 Remain at your hotel or hospital when authorities advise avoiding travel.
💛 Do not walk through floodwater. It can conceal open drains, electrical hazards and contaminated water.
💛 Keep your medications, dressings and medical instructions accessible.
💛 Maintain hydration and follow your prescribed postoperative nutrition plan.
💛 Continue gentle movement indoors as permitted by your surgeon, rather than remaining completely immobile.
💛 If you have a scheduled postoperative examination, contact your medical team before attempting to travel through flooded areas.
Do not miss essential medical care without speaking to your surgical team.
If you experience chest pain, breathing difficulties, significant bleeding or other emergency symptoms, seek urgent medical assistance.
🚗 AIRPORT TRANSFERS & RETURN FLIGHTS
Recent storms have already caused flight diversions and serious road disruption.
Even when airports remain operational, the journey between your hotel, hospital and airport may be affected.
If you’re due to fly home:
• Reconfirm your flight status.
• Check that your transfer provider can safely reach you.
• Allow additional travel time where appropriate.
• Keep essential medication and medical documentation with you.
• Contact your surgical team if disruption affects your medical clearance or postoperative arrangements.
Do not risk travelling through floodwater simply to avoid missing a flight.

💛 A MESSAGE FROM KIM
One of the reasons I place so much importance on dedicated patient support is that unexpected situations can happen while you’re thousands of miles from home.
Weather emergencies, flight disruptions and medical concerns don’t always follow a convenient schedule.
Whether you’re travelling for cosmetic surgery, bariatric treatment or dental care, knowing who to contact and having a proper contingency plan matters.
If you’re currently in Istanbul, please put your safety first.
And if you’re preparing to travel, take the time to confirm your arrangements before departure.
I’ll continue following official weather and travel updates as conditions develop.
Are you currently in Istanbul or travelling there this weekend?
Let us know how conditions are in your area, but please stay somewhere safe before commenting.
💛 Knowledge first. Safety always.
