We celebrate two Trillium Health Partners nurses – Natalia Sumalo-Tsap and Elena Petretchenko – who stepped forward to provide critical medical care in Ukraine.

Since 2014, Natalia Sumalo-Tsap has completed 12 humanitarian deployments through the Canada Ukraine Foundation and the Canada Ukraine Surgical Aid Program – providing surgical care to patients suffering from traumatic injuries caused by bullets, shrapnel, and explosions. Her most recent medical mission was this past April.

Elena Petretchenko deployed to western Ukraine in May 2022 with Canadian Medical Assistance Teams. Each day, they left their headquarters in Poland, crossed the border and provided medical care in mobile clinics in Volyn Oblast.

She and the health care team treated patients facing both physical injuries and severe emotional trauma – “focusing on delivering primary health care, family medicine, and mental health support for internally displaced Ukrainians.”

It is the same spirit of generosity that drives Trillium Health Partners Foundation donors, whose contributions help fund the programs, equipment, and services that make this level of care possible.

Since 2022, Trillium Health Partners has cared for many Ukrainian refugees arriving in the Greater Toronto Area, patients who carry both physical and psychological scars of war.

Your donation to Trillium Health Partners Foundation helps with things like the trauma care, mental health support, and newcomer health services that Ukrainian refugees and patients depend on right after they arrive in our community.

Big things happen when the community comes together!

We’re so grateful to Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) for being the Presenting Sponsor of The Hazel McCallion Walk for Health since 2022. This year, they’re joining us to celebrate something special – the walk’s 5th anniversary!

“Supporting the walk is important to RBC,” says Sylvia Coughlan, Regional Vice President at RBC. “It’s a very real expression of RBC’s purpose to help communities prosper. And this year, RBC is honoured to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the walk alongside the Mississauga community.”

RBC’s values have fostered a community of giving. “RBC’s employees care about the community they serve,” says Sylvia. “They show up and they bring their energy” – whether in support of The Hazel McCallion Walk for Health or other events that help strengthen the community.

RBC’s commitment to excellence also shows up in the Olympic athletes the company sponsors – some of whom attend The Hazel McCallion Walk for Health to warm up the crowd before participants set off on the walk with fun and easy-to-follow exercises.

Last year, accomplished RBC Olympians Bismark Boateng and Madeleine Kelly led these warmups. This year, Canadian bobsledding powerhouse Cynthia Appiah will lead the 2 km and 5 km pre-walk warmups.

RBC encourages everyone in the community to donate, volunteer their time, or sponsor events like The Hazel McCallion Walk for Health.

The Hazel McCallion Walk for Health takes place:
• On Sunday, June 7th
• At Mississauga’s Port Credit Memorial Park

Pamela, a cardiology nurse at Trillium Health Partners, understands the importance of supporting her local hospital.

Pamela attended the very first Hazel McCallion Walk for Health in 2022 and has participated every year since, even singing the Canadian national anthem at last year’s event.

She looks forward to participating and singing again this year. 🎶

“It's important for people to participate in the Walk for Health so that we can bring awareness to our community, to our city, and to promote that we are raising funds to build the biggest hospital in Canada for the future,” says Pamela.

Want to walk alongside dedicated health care workers like Pamela?

Join us at the Hazel McCallion Walk for Health and help raise funds for the largest hospital redevelopment project in Canadian history – right here in our community.
