Who decided that women should spend their lives trying to become smaller?
The pressure starts early and follows many women into their 40s, 50s and beyond. Then perimenopause arrives, body composition changes and the response is often another restrictive diet.
Eat less.
Try harder.
Lose more weight.
But this is exactly when protecting muscle becomes increasingly important.
I want women to shift the goal from taking up less space to owning their space, strength and future health. That does not mean we ignore metabolic health or pretend body fat never matters. It means we use accurate language and better strategies.
Reduce excess adiposity where appropriate.
Eat enough protein.
Resistance train consistently.
Protect bones, cognition, mobility and independence.
You do not need to punish your body into becoming smaller. You need a plan that helps your body become stronger.
