The College of Family Physicians of Canada is the voice of family medicine, with over 35,000 members. Working with provincial chapters we are committed to meeting the highest standards for patient care. We advocate for family physicians, define and celebrate the role of family medicine and family practice at the heart of our health care system, and work to ensure everyone in Canada can access high quality care from a family physician.

A shared model of care can make all the difference.

Now Mainpro+ certified! In this clip from episode 13 of Family Medicine Matters, Dr. Cian O'Morain reflects on the impact of transitioning to a shared model of care, supported by physician leadership. By distributing responsibility across the team, he felt less isolated, knowing his colleagues had his back and he had theirs. It also improved his quality of life. When everyone has the full picture, care becomes stronger and more sustainable.

Missed the Member Town Hall?

Watch the recording to learn what we heard from members across the country, how that feedback is informing the CFPC's strategic direction, and what's next for Family Medicine Forward.

The recording also includes an overview of proposed updates to the CFPC's bylaws, why they are being advanced, and how members will be able to consider them at the 2026 Annual Meeting of Members.

Family medicine needs the support of policy makers at every level to thrive and continue serving as the foundation of the Canadian health care system. Every year, the CFPC submits recommendations to the federal government ahead of the federal budget.

It is an opportunity to highlight the challenges facing family medicine and recommend investments that can improve access to care for patients across Canada.

At a time of economic uncertainty – we do not necessarily need to be spending more, but we must be spending on what makes the biggest difference.

Our 2026 submission focuses on practical solutions to reduce administrative burden, support family medicine training, help new family physicians establish practices, and improve digital health interoperability.

The College belongs to its members. Members should be able to understand how it is governed, how they can participate, and what their rights are.

That is why the CFPC’s by-laws matter. They are the rules behind the College, shaping governance, member participation, and important decisions. Over many years, those rules have been amended in response to specific needs. The result is a patchwork, with provisions that can be inconsistent, no longer reflect today’s meeting environment, or no longer align with the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act.

The Board has directed a section-by-section review with legal advice. The immediate proposed changes are intended to correct the by-laws and ensure they are clear, consistent, and compliant with the law. The broader lesson is that the CFPC needs a better way to keep its governance rules current and coherent over time.

In Common Ground, CFPC President Dr. Sarah Cook explains why this work deserves members’ attention.
