By-laws are probably not the first thing that comes to mind when family physicians think about their College. Yet they set out how the CFPC is governed, how members participate, and how important decisions are made.

Over time, the CFPC’s by-laws have been amended to respond to specific needs. The result is a patchwork: some provisions are inconsistent, some no longer reflect today’s meeting environment, and some no longer align with the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act.

The Board has directed a section-by-section review with legal advice. The proposed corrective amendments will be brought together for consideration at the Annual Meeting of Members in October.

Recognition matters, but rural family physicians need more than appreciation. They need systems that make care sustainable.

That includes dependable locum coverage, team-based care designed for local realities, training opportunities that bring learners into rural and remote communities, and workforce planning that accounts for seasonal population growth. It also means recognizing time away from practice as essential to safe care, not as something physicians must sacrifice when coverage falls short.

Rural family physicians have repeatedly shown extraordinary dedication to their patients and communities. The challenge is capacity. The CFPC will continue to advocate for solutions that reflect the distinct realities of rural, remote, and Northern practice.
