🔹️Acetaminophen (Paracetamol) Use During Pregnancy: June 2026 Update
In agreement with both the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, acetaminophen (paracetamol) remains the first-line medication for the treatment of pain and fever during pregnancy.
Current evidence does not support a causal relationship between prenatal acetaminophen exposure and neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD or autism. While some observational studies have reported associations, higher-quality analyses accounting for genetic and familial factors have not demonstrated causation.
Untreated maternal fever and significant pain may themselves pose risks to both mother and fetus. Therefore, when clinically indicated, acetaminophen should not be withheld during pregnancy.
●Key recommendations:
▪︎ Use when medically indicated
▪︎ Use the lowest effective dose
▪︎ Use for the shortest duration necessary.
▪︎ Seek medical advice if symptoms persist.
