On World Mental Health Day, we’re remembering that connection doesn’t always require a big activity or perfectly planned moment. πŸ’š

Sometimes it happens during the everyday routines we already share β€” including the ride to school, therapy, activities, or home.

Our newest blog, Car Rides That Build Language, shares easy ways to turn time in the car into opportunities for conversation and language development.

Try talking about what you see outside, playing guessing games, telling stories, asking your child about their day, or simply giving them the space to talk.

Small conversations can create meaningful moments of connection. πŸ’¬πŸš—

When we hear the word occupation, we usually think of a job.

For children, their β€œoccupations” include things like playing, learning, getting dressed, eating, participating at school, completing daily routines, and spending time with friends and family. πŸ’›

Pediatric Occupational Therapists can help children develop skills and strategies that support greater participation and independence in these everyday activities.

Today is National Child Health Day. πŸ’›

Children's health includes so much more than what we can see on the outside.

Communication, movement, emotional well-being, independence, feeding, relationships, play, learning, and participation in everyday activities can all contribute to a child’s overall health and development.

At Developing Hands, our multidisciplinary team works alongside children and families to support the skills that help them participate more fully at home, at school, and within their communities.

Here’s to supporting the whole child β€” their strengths, needs, interests, and individual development. 🌱

To a child, it may just feel like playing.

But during play, children can be practicing communication, movement, problem-solving, turn-taking, emotional regulation, creativity, and so much more. 🧸✨

Play also gives adults an opportunity to follow a child’s interests and build skills through activities that are meaningful and motivating to them.

Development doesn’t always have to look like sitting at a table completing a structured activity. Sometimes learning looks like blocks on the floor, pretend food in a toy kitchen, a game of tag, or a very serious conversation between stuffed animals. πŸ’›

Storytime can be a wonderful opportunity to build language, connection, and conversation. πŸ“šπŸ’¬

Our latest blog, Shared Book Reading Strategies, explores simple ways caregivers can make reading together more interactive.

Instead of focusing only on reading every word on the page, try pausing, talking about the pictures, asking questions, making predictions, and giving your child opportunities to add their own ideas.

These little moments can turn a book into a meaningful shared conversation. πŸ’›

October is here! πŸ‚
With school routines settling in and fall officially underway, this is a great time to check in on how your child is managing their everyday routines.

Are mornings feeling overwhelming? Is homework becoming a struggle? Are transitions, communication, movement, mealtimes, or daily tasks becoming challenging?

Sometimes small changes and the right support can make everyday routines feel much more manageable for both children and their families. πŸ’›

Developing Hands supports children and youth up to age 18 through Speech & Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Feeding Therapy, and Counselling.

September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. 🧑

Today, we honour:
🧑 The children who never returned home
🧑 Survivors of residential schools
🧑 Their families and communities
🧑 The generations who continue to experience the impacts of the residential school system

This day provides an opportunity to listen, learn and reflect on the history and ongoing impacts of residential schools and the responsibility we all share in advancing reconciliation.

At Developing Hands, we recognize the importance of creating spaces where children and families are treated with dignity, respect and compassion.

Every Child Matters. 🧑

Confidence grows when children have opportunities to experience that exciting feeling of β€œI did it!” 🌱

There are lots of simple ways to encourage independence throughout the day:
βœ“ Let your child make age-appropriate choices
βœ“ Give them time to try before stepping in
βœ“ Encourage them to think through small problems
βœ“ Include them in everyday household routines
βœ“ Provide repeated opportunities to practise developing skills

It can be tempting to immediately help when a child is struggling β€” especially when we know we could complete the task much faster.

Instead, try asking:
πŸ’ β€œWhat could you try?”
πŸ’ β€œWould you like a little help?”
πŸ’ β€œWhat's the next step?”

The goal isn't to leave children frustrated. It's about providing just enough support while still giving them opportunities to practise, problem-solve and experience success.
