That’s a whole lot of florals 😅 My second vintage table cloth, this time a soft linen and my new tea mug. Hopefully this mug will survive the terror that is my cat Bean (there have been some devastating casualties). Today’s reading for myself was one of those that are so very on point that I exclaimed out loud a few times. I am still amazed at the accuracy of the tarot. I knew I was hooked the first day I started learning 💕

When I read the cards for myself, I love to do spreads, or positional readings. Typically, when reading for clients, I reach for my Marseille deck (French style) because I find that it really cuts through the clutter to answer questions directly and effectively. I also use RWS-style decks but for more general readings. However, when I sit down to read for myself, the latter is my favourite because I get to experiment with spreads and positional readings from the various tarot books I have at home. Today’s spread came from the accompanying book to my Tarot in Wonderland deck. It’s called The Mad Tea Party. It’s all about discovering what is the seeker’s “madness” and seeing what triggers it and what can be done about it. What I find interesting about this particular layout is the choosing of the “madness” card before starting to shuffle. Getting to the root of what blocks a person is half the battle. It takes a keen eye to see what exactly holds a person back from living a more authentic life.

In today’s reading, I chose for myself the 7 of Cups (bottom of the middle four cards) because one of the things that I feel can hold me back is my scattered interests. I love the French phrase “l’embarras du choix” because it points to having so many options that the person becomes paralyzed in their choices. Tarot is a great helper in this situation, providing some guidance as to which direction or directions might be most beneficial. In this particular reading for myself, the answer is to go within and focus on further developing my ability to connect to the spirit world that provides deeper guidance.

I’m trying out my new Tarot in Wonderland deck, a sweet birthday present from my partner. So far, I’m finding it to be a great fit. I’ve been a huge fan of the Lewis Carroll classic for years and this new deck is so full of colour and beautiful scenes inspired by the original illustrations. On the same day I received the deck, I got news that a family friend had passed away (a very fast moving cancer of which I was unaware until I received news of her passing). One of the first questions I asked my deck was about the circumstances of her passing and what was the best way to honour her life. The cards fell perfectly. Today I did a reading for myself and the same card that came up to honour her life appeared again as advice (top card, 9 of Pentacles). The message is to appreciate one’s own hard work while also remembering to share the fruits of labour with those who are dear to us. In this card, Alice is alone in a beautiful garden. It reminds me of last summer in my own backyard, appreciating the beauty of new and established plants and wishing I could bring all my friends to enjoy it too (difficult with the pandemic on-going). Also in this reading, in the “don’t do this” position (bottom card), there is the reminder to stop running around the same wheel, always striving forward, and be present instead. I get stuck in “strive” mode sometimes and all this does is steal my peace of mind. These cards get me.
