If your toothbrush bristles are flared or worn out after just a few weeks, it usually means you’re brushing too hard.

Brushing aggressively doesn’t make your teeth cleaner... and over time, too much pressure can contribute to enamel wear and gum recession. Once enamel or gum tissue is lost, it doesn’t simply grow back!

A simple solution? Try switching to an electric toothbrush. Some models even have pressure sensors that alert you (with a red light, a change in vibration, or another signal) when you’re brushing too hard.

Your dental hygienist can recommend a toothbrush and brushing technique that work best for your individual needs!

Research is continuously exploring the relationship between oral health and overall health. While many of these connections are not yet fully understood, research suggests that poor oral health may increase your risk of heart disease.

Regular visits with a dental professional are an important part of maintaining your oral health!

Here's what we know:
❀ Bacteria can travel from your mouth to other organs.
❀ Nearly 1 in 2 adults worldwide has gum disease.
❀ Moderate to severe gum disease is associated with a 20–40% higher risk of cardiovascular disease.
❀ Oral bacteria have been detected in atherosclerotic plaques.
❀ People with gum disease have about a 24% higher risk of stroke.

Other risk factors for heart disease can include smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, physical inactivity, poor nutrition and family history.

Did you know that dental sealants can help prevent cavities? đŸŠ·

Sealants are a thin, protective coating applied to the grooves of back teeth, where cavities are more likely to form. They act as a shield, helping to keep food and bacteria out of these hard-to-clean areas.

While both adults and children can benefit from this preventive treatment, sealants are often recommended when the permanent molars first erupt, around ages 6 and 12.

Ask your dental hygienist about dental sealants at your next visit!

😮 This is why persistent mouth breathing should never be ignored during childhood.

Breathing through the nose does much more than deliver air to the lungs. During childhood, normal nasal breathing helps support healthy airway function, proper tongue posture, balanced jaw growth, and normal facial development.

When mouth breathing becomes a long-term habit—often because of allergies, enlarged adenoids or tonsils, or chronic nasal blockage—it may influence how the face and jaws develop over time.

Research has linked persistent mouth breathing with a narrower upper jaw, a high-arched palate, crowded teeth, increased overjet, and a longer, narrower facial appearance in some growing children. These changes are thought to occur because the tongue rests lower in the mouth instead of against the palate, reducing the natural support needed for normal maxillary development.

Not every child who breathes through the mouth develops these features, but the risk is higher when the habit persists during the years of active growth.

Nasal breathing also allows air to pass through the nasal passages, where nitric oxide is naturally produced. This molecule helps improve airflow, oxygen exchange, and circulation. Studies have also associated chronic mouth breathing with poorer sleep quality, lower oxygen efficiency, and daytime problems such as reduced concentration and fatigue.

Facial growth is influenced by many factors, including genetics and overall health. However, persistent mouth breathing should never be considered "normal." Identifying and treating the underlying cause early can help support healthier facial growth, better sleep, improved airway function, and may reduce the need for more complex orthodontic treatment later.

Healthy facial development begins with healthy breathing habits.

Did you know that crunchy fruits and veggies can help scrape off disease causing dental plaque?

Processed foods like “fruit” snacks, apple sauce, juice, and other packaged snacks are generally higher in sugar than whole foods and can contribute to tooth decay!

Foods like carrot sticks, apples, pears, celery, and peppers are like nature’s toothbrush and can help clean teeth throughout the day 🙌

_________________________
