A good bowel preparation is one of the most important parts of a colonoscopy.
Why? Because in order to properly detect polyps, inflammation, or other abnormalities, the colon needs to be as clean as possible. 👀
Even small amounts of stool can reduce visibility during the procedure and sometimes require repeating the preparation… or even the colonoscopy itself.
Yes, the preparation can be unpleasant. But it is essential for a safe, accurate, and reliable exam. 💙
Here are a few tips to help make the process easier 👇
💧 1. Drink slowly, but consistently
Take small sips every 5–10 minutes instead of drinking everything at once to help prevent nausea.
🥣 2. Eat light a few days beforehand
Avoid high-fiber foods 2–3 days before your colonoscopy to make the bowel easier to clean.
🍋 3. Use a straw
This can help reduce the taste of the preparation.
🧊 4. Drink it cold
Using ice or an insulated cup can make the solution easier to tolerate.
🕐 5. Start your prep at the exact recommended time
Timing is crucial to ensure the colon is clean for the procedure.
🛋️ 6. Prepare a “survival kit”
Comfortable clothes, wipes, cream, blankets, and Netflix 😅
🚽 7. Stay close to a bathroom
Once it starts working… things can move quickly!
🥤 8. Alternate with clear fluids
Broth, apple juice, clear Gatorade, tea without milk, etc.
💧 9. Stay hydrated
You lose a lot of fluids during the preparation process.
💙 10. Protect your skin
Vaseline or soothing creams can help prevent irritation.
🍲 11. Chicken broth can help
Taking a few sips between doses may help make the taste more tolerable.
✨ A good prep = a better colonoscopy.
