ONTARIO | Canada's pharmaceutical industry residency program enters its 2027–2028 recruitment cycle

The Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Toronto is hosting a virtual information session today, August 12, for prospective applicants to the 2027–2028 Pharmaceutical Industry Residency Program (PIRP), a national educational residency program offered in cooperation with participating pharmaceutical companies.

The session focuses on the program structure and application process and features current industry partners and former residents. The Faculty says applications for the 2027–2028 cycle will open in fall 2026. PIRP offers one- or two-year specialty residencies designed to build knowledge, skills and practical experience in pharmaceutical-industry functions.

For pharmacy graduates considering careers beyond traditional community and hospital practice, the new cycle highlights another structured pathway into pharmaceutical-industry roles and gives prospective applicants a chance to prepare before applications open this fall.

NOVA SCOTIA | Final days to apply for Nova Scotia’s Jordan pharmacist licensure pathway

The Nova Scotia Pharmacy Regulator is accepting applications until
August 16 for the next phase of its Jordan Pharmacy Licensure Pathway, an initiative designed to bring internationally educated pharmacists into practice in Nova Scotia through a structured licensure and recruitment process.

The pathway includes screening, practice-based assessment through Dalhousie Continuing Education, and support aimed at helping eligible pharmacists move toward full licensure and employment in the province. Nova Scotia says the first cohort began obtaining full licensure in May 2026, while applications are now open for additional candidates.

For pharmacy teams across Canada, the initiative is another concrete example of provinces looking beyond traditional recruitment channels to address pharmacist workforce needs and accelerate the integration of internationally trained professionals.

CANADA | Health Canada launches a new national search portal for drug clinical trials Health Canada has launched a new public national portal designed to make it easier to find authorized clinical trials involving pharmaceutical, biologic and radiopharmaceutical drugs in Canada.

The new Canadian Clinical Trial Search Portal allows users to search studies by condition, drug, trial status and location, making information on ongoing and authorized research more accessible to patients, healthcare professionals and researchers.

Artificial intelligence is also part of the system. Health Canada says AI is being used to help match Canadian trials with international registries and to translate certain study titles. At launch, about 17% of trials had been matched with international records with the help of AI.

MANITOBA | Canada has announced a new medical countermeasures
laboratory facility in Winnipeg to strengthen national preparedness
for high-consequence biological threats.

The federal announcement was made on August 5, 2026. The facility is
planned beside the National Microbiology Laboratory and is intended to
support work involving medical countermeasures such as vaccines,
therapeutics and diagnostics used during major public-health
emergencies.

Federal procurement documents describe a high-containment laboratory
complex of approximately 13,000 square metres. Once completed, the
project is expected to expand Canada’s domestic capacity to research,
evaluate and support the deployment of medical countermeasures during
outbreaks, pandemics and other biological emergencies.

CANADA | New pressure on India’s pharmaceutical supply chain raises a
direct warning for Canada’s medication supply.

A Reuters report published today says India’s pharmaceutical sector is
facing higher freight costs, longer shipping routes caused by
continued Red Sea disruptions and growing uncertainty around future
U.S. tariffs on generic drugs. India’s government-backed
pharmaceutical export body now expects the sector to fall well short
of its previously stated 2030 sales target.

For Canada, the significance goes beyond India’s export outlook. A
recent federal pharmaceutical-sector report says Canada now relies on
imports for 93% of domestic drug expenditures, while China and India
together account for roughly 80% of global active pharmaceutical
ingredient production. That concentration means prolonged shipping
delays, trade barriers or production shifts in India can quickly
increase procurement pressure and shortage risk across Canadian
pharmacies and hospitals.

NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR | New Canadian research strengthens the case
for funded blood pressure screening in community pharmacies

A newly published special supplement of the Canadian Pharmacists
Journal reports strong results from community pharmacy-based blood
pressure screening in Newfoundland and Labrador.

During the 2024 May Measurement Month campaign, pharmacists screened
220 adults. Elevated blood pressure was identified in 25.5% of
participants, including 18.3% of people with no known history of
hypertension and 55.3% of participants living with diabetes.

A related patient survey found that 96.8% considered pharmacy-based
screening acceptable or completely acceptable, while 93.5% felt
comfortable or very comfortable during the service.

The findings reinforce the practical role community pharmacies can
play in detecting undiagnosed or poorly controlled hypertension and
support calls for structured, funded pharmacy screening programs.
