Neck tension has a way of sneaking up on us.

Sometimes it’s from hours at a desk. Sometimes it’s from scrolling our phones. And lately for me, it’s been from spending countless hours, day and night, curled up in a rocking chair nursing my baby or bent over working in the garden.

It’s a reminder that if we don’t make time to pause and take care of our bodies, eventually they have a way of making us slow down. For me, if I’m not careful, tension will continue to build until I find myself dealing with tension headaches or even triggering a migraine.

One of my favourite ways to release some of that built-up tension is this simple supported neck stretch using two yoga blocks.

Place one block on its lowest setting and lean a second block against it to create a gentle angle. Slowly begin to lie back, positioning the edge of the angled block along the base of your skull so your head and neck can relax into the support. Then, let gravity do the work.

There’s no need to force or pull yourself deeper into the stretch. Take a few slow breaths, allow your body to soften into the support, and notice as the body gradually releases that tension you’ve been holding.

Spending even a few minutes here can help:
• Gently stretch and release tension through the neck and upper shoulders
• Ease feelings of stiffness after long periods of sitting, nursing, gardening, or looking down at a screen
• Create space for slower, deeper breathing
• Give your body a few quiet minutes to slow down and relax

The best part is that you don’t have to force a stretch to feel the benefits. When your body feels supported and grounded, it can become much easier to soften and let go of some of the tension you’ve been carrying.

Have you tried this stretch before? Save this post to come back to the next time your neck and shoulders are asking for a little extra care.

It’s been a while since I’ve properly introduced myself around here, and with some new faces joining us lately, I thought it was time!

I’m Clarissa, the owner and one of the instructors behind Exhale Yoga Moosomin. Yoga has been part of my life for nearly two decades, long before I ever imagined teaching it. It carried me through university, years working as an oilfield engineer, becoming a mom, career changes, pregnancies, postpartum seasons, running a business, and all the wonderfully messy parts of everyday life.

After having my first baby, I finally decided to pursue something I had dreamed about for years and completed my yoga teacher training. What started as simply wanting to share something I loved eventually grew into Exhale Yoga Moosomin.

I’m originally from Northern Ontario, but Moosomin has been home since 2018. What started as a move to a new town quickly became finding a community that welcomed me in and a place that truly felt like home.

When I opened Exhale Yoga, I wanted to create a space that offered that same sense of belonging to others. Somewhere you could walk through the door, take a breath, put everything else down for an hour, and connect with yourself and the people around you.

I wanted it to feel welcoming whether you’ve practiced yoga for years or you’re stepping onto a mat for the very first time. That focus on connection, community, and creating an inclusive space has been at the heart of Exhale Yoga from the beginning.

I’m incredibly grateful that I get to do this work in a community that welcomed me all those years ago. Whether you’ve been practicing with me since the beginning, recently found the studio, or you’re quietly following along waiting for the right time to try your first class, I’m so happy you’re here.

Now that I’ve reintroduced myself, I’d love to hear from you too! How long have you been following along, and have we had the chance to practice together yet?

As a wife, a mom, a business owner, and someone trying to keep a household running, my brain rarely slows down. There’s always another email to answer, a meal to plan, laundry to fold, or someone needing another snack.

That’s why I’ve come to value movement so much. For one hour, I get to stop overthinking. I don’t have to solve problems or make decisions. I just get to breathe, move, and be present in my body.

Some days that looks like a strong, challenging flow. Other days it’s gentle stretching or simply lying in Savasana for a few extra minutes. It doesn’t really matter what kind of movement it is. What matters is giving my mind permission to rest.

I’ve noticed that when I make space for that hour, I show up more patiently for my family, more creatively in the studio, and with a little more energy for everything else life throws my way.

If you’ve been feeling like your mind has been “on” all the time lately, consider this your reminder that it’s okay to take an hour just for you. Your to-do list will still be there when you’re done.

What helps you switch your brain off for a little while? I’d love to hear in the comments.
