Autism can be missed when we only look for “difficulty socialising”.
An autistic child might chat happily about their favourite subject, make eye contact, or seem fine at school, then come home completely overwhelmed. They may need extra time to answer a question, find sudden changes upsetting, notice sounds or textures others barely register, or use repeated movements and sounds to stay regulated.
Some people need routine. Some have intense interests. Some communicate differently. Some mask how hard things feel until they are exhausted.
There is no one “look” to autism, and no two autistic people experience it in exactly the same way.
A little more understanding can make daily life easier: give processing time, explain changes early, lower sensory pressure where possible, and listen to what helps that individual person feel safe.
