πŸ‘ŸπŸŒ THE NIJMEGEN EXPERIENCE
The 4-Day March β€” 2026
Part 2 of 3

A very special shout-out must go to our teammate Michel, a member of the Royal Dutch Marines. Michel did so much more than walk alongside us. He became our guide, our cultural ambassador, and our connection to the Dutch military community. Every day, he walked with us and explained the culture, history, sights, and significance of the places we were passing through. His knowledge added a completely different dimension to the march and allowed us to experience the Netherlands in a way we never could have on our own.

Michel also arranged access for our team to the Royal Dutch Marines rest area, which was an incredible privilege. There, we had the opportunity to meet Dutch military leaders and were treated with an extraordinary level of respect. We were provided with food and drinks and had a comfortable place to sit, relax, and recharge away from the tens of thousands of people using the regular event rest stops. After walking for hours, having a quieter place to recover was incredibly valuable and very much appreciated by everyone on the team. It was another example of the generosity and hospitality that we experienced throughout our time in the Netherlands.

The support did not stop there. Michel's wife, Marijke, along with friends and family members, would meet us at various points along the route after long periods of marching. They would arrive with coffee, cookies, water, and other Dutch snacks, along with huge smiles and encouragement. Imagine walking for hours, tired, sore, and wondering how many kilometres were still ahead, only to see friendly faces waiting for you with refreshments and encouragement. Those moments provided an extra boost exactly when we needed it. The kindness shown by Michel, Merika, their family, and friends was truly unmatched and helped make us feel welcomed and supported every step of the way.

After each day of marching, the team made time to stretch and recover in the pool at the hotel. After walking 40 kilometres, those recovery sessions became an important part of our daily routine. The pool allowed us to loosen up, stretch our legs, relax, and prepare ourselves mentally and physically for another consecutive day of marching. It became a simple but important rhythm: walk, recover, reset, and do it all again.

Then came the final day and the legendary Via Gladiola. The last 10 kilometres leading to the finish line are unlike anything else. The crowds seemed even larger, the music louder, and the energy more intense. Participants were surrounded by enormous crowds of Dutch people celebrating the achievement. Flowers filled the streets, and marchers were showered with flowers as they made their way toward the finish. The love of the Dutch people for the participants β€” and especially the connection between the Netherlands and Canada β€” was on full display. It was impossible to take it all in at once. The Via Gladiola was more than the final stretch of a 160-kilometre challenge. It was a celebration of perseverance, friendship, community, and international respect. It is a memory that will stay with us forever.

After four days, four consecutive 40-kilometre marches, countless hours on our feet, sore muscles, fatigue, and more than a few blisters, our team crossed the finish line together. Six members registered. Six members started. Six members finished. Every single person earned the Vierdaagsekruis, the Cross for the 4-Day March. That means a 100% completion rate for our team, with every member completing 160 kilometres over four days. The medal represents much more than distance. It represents preparation, determination, resilience, commitment, and the willingness to keep moving when your body is telling you to stop. Most importantly, it represents finishing together.

πŸ‘ŸπŸŒ THE NIJMEGEN EXPERIENCE
The 4-Day March β€” 2026
Part 1 of 3

What an utterly fantastic experience! The Nijmegen 4-Day March was everything we hoped it would be and so much more. From the moment we landed in the Netherlands until the moment we left, we received what can only be described as VIP treatment. While the march itself was an incredible physical and mental challenge, it was the people of the Netherlands who truly made this experience unforgettable. Their generosity, warmth, enthusiasm, humour, and genuine affection for Canada were on display everywhere we went. Quite honestly, we need more Dutch people in the world!

Our journey began before we ever stepped onto the Nijmegen route. On Monday, the day before the march officially began, our team travelled to Groesbeek to attend a ceremony at the Canadian War Cemetery. Standing among the graves of Canadian servicemen who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Second World War was both deeply moving and profoundly humbling. The ceremony was a heartfelt expression of the Netherlands' enduring gratitude and appreciation for the sacrifices Canada made during the war and for the role Canadian forces played in helping liberate the Dutch people. As Canadian Veterans standing in that cemetery, the experience carried an even deeper meaning. It was a powerful reminder of the history that connects our two nations and of the courage and sacrifice of those who came before us. The ceremony was emotional, warming, memorable, and unforgettable. It was the perfect way to begin our Nijmegen journey β€” remembering those who served and sacrificed before stepping onto the road ourselves.

Our full team arrived at Amsterdam Schiphol International Airport on Friday, proudly wearing our TVF Team Polos. Waiting for us was Marc, who immediately became an important part of our team. He collected us from the airport and transported us to Hotel De Bilderberg in Oosterbeek, our home base for the trip. The hotel was fantastic, with a very hospitable staff who went above and beyond to look after us. With our daily departures scheduled for approximately 04:15, the hotel ensured we had breakfast and takeaway food prepared for us at around 03:00 every morning. That level of support was greatly appreciated and gave us the fuel we needed to face each day's 40-kilometre challenge.

A very special thank you goes to Marc and Bianca for their incredible assistance with the background planning, organization, transportation, and logistics. Their support helped make the entire experience run smoothly. Marc was not simply our driver; he became part of the team. Every morning, he was ready and waiting to take us through the back streets of the Netherlands to the start line, and somehow, he managed to be there every single day without fail and never late. Whether we needed transportation to the march, a grocery store, or anywhere else, Marc was always ready to help. After a long day of marching, knowing that he would be there to get us back was a huge comfort. The kindness shown by Marc and Bianca was truly unmatched, and we are incredibly grateful for everything they did for us.

When we arrived at the starting line and joined approximately 47,000 other participants, it became immediately clear that we were about to experience something unlike anything we had ever seen. The affection that the Dutch people have for Canada was everywhere. It was not something you simply observed; it was something you could feel. The energy throughout the event was absolutely incredible. Every town, village, and city we passed through seemed determined to outdo the one before it. As we marched along the route, the streets came alive with music, singing, dancing, cheering, food, drinks, gifts, and an extraordinary amount of kindness. People stood outside their homes and businesses for hours simply to encourage the marchers. Complete strangers would offer food and refreshments and cheer us on as though they had known us for years.

Throughout the four-day event, the Dutch people assembled in mass to celebrate the marchers. Every community seemed to turn the Nijmegen March into its own festival. Music filled the streets, people danced, families gathered, children handed out drinks, and volunteers provided food and snacks. The atmosphere was simply incredible. There were moments when fatigue and sore muscles started to take their toll, but then a crowd would suddenly erupt with cheering and somehow you would find another gear. That is the magic of Nijmegen. The Dutch did not simply host the event; they became a fundamental part of the experience.
