The words dysregulated, overwhelmed and discombobulated have been coming up a lot in my clients lately and it seems like we’re all just feeling the weight of the world right now 💥🙇🏻

When you’re feeling off sometimes it might feel like the only answer is to run away and live on an island alone where no one can reach you 🏝️ or you might feel like now is the time to finally start that diet and workout plan you’ve been meaning to try and you know it will solve all your problems 🏃🏼‍♀️🥦 and yes, technically both of those options might work but only for the short term, eventually you’ll get lonely and bored on the island or you’ll burn yourself out trying to stay on top of a health regiment when you’re already exhausted

The real answer lies somewhere in the middle, finding a balance between getting away from the issue but also still putting time and energy into your wellness ⚖️ there is no specific routine that will work for everyone, it’s about what works for you!

Stick to the things you find comforting and easy, maybe the same meal every day or watching the show you’ve seen a million times. Make your world a little smaller where you can, reschedule plans, delay making that big decision. Let your routine be as simple as possible, letting your brain find safety in routine and giving you a chance to breath 🧠🧘🏽‍♀️❤️‍🩹

Clients often ask “what do you think I should do?” when they’re faced with a big decision and the reality is that I have no idea. I have never lived your life, I have never felt your pain or experienced your relationships. You are the expert on your life and your experiences 💭❤️‍🩹

Going to school to become a therapist doesn’t suddenly give us the ability to know the “right” answer or a crystal ball to know how things will work out for you 🔮 but it does teach out how to create warm and safe spaces, how to ask questions that dive a little deeper, how to understand the barriers that might impact making a decision and how to help build the confidence in knowing you can make the right choice for yourself 🧰💬📚

My job is never to tell you what to do, it’s to help you figure out what you truly want to do.

Sharing a bit of a hot take today! 🔥 Please keep in mind that this is just my opinion, not a statement of right/wrong, do what works best for you!

Gratitude journaling is something that we know comes with a lot of benefits and it makes sense, right? Spend some time thinking about good things and you’ll feel good! 📝😃 So what’s the issue?

My post today isn’t about whether gratitude journaling is good or bad, just about understanding the line between gratitude and avoidance. Being human means that we have things we can be thankful for but also things that just suck. Sometimes there is no silver lining, no positive side or thing to be grateful for, and that’s okay!

When we spend time trying to be grateful, without first learning how to be self compassionate, it starts to sound like avoidance. Spend time with a gratitude journal if that’s what works for you, they’re important and helpful, but don’t forget to allow space for the difficult things too ✏️❤️‍🩹

I don’t know about you, but I know I have been feeling heartbreak, anger and so much confusion every time I look at the news or check social media. Things feel so heavy and scary, with no signs or it letting up. It’s hard to deal with all that emotion at once when so much feels outside of our control 😡😧😢🫨

So what do we do?! What I practice myself and help support clients in, is trying to regain any control we can. First, start with yourself. What changes can you make to your own habits and practices can you adjust? What needs aren’t being met? It may feel pointless but there’s a reason “you can’t pour from an empty cup” became a such a popular quote ☕️🧠💕

Next, find ways to practice your values. So much is happening right now that doesn’t feel grounded in kindness, compassion or empathy, so find your own ways to practice them. It might feel small or insignificant but you have more power than you think! Maybe you can’t stop things on a global level, but changing someone’s day is still important 💐🎁📝

Finally, don’t let yourself be alone in these feelings. Heavy feelings have a way of making us isolate or believe we’re alone, you’re not ❤️ a lot of us are scared and angry, let’s feel it together 📱🫂💬

When it comes to self care there are thousands of options of things you can try. You’ll hear suggestions from friends, family social media, employers and sometimes even strangers 🗣️😥

“Take a walk” “read a book” “call a friend” “take a deep breath”

But the reality of self care is that it’s going to look different for everyone. What helps to soothe and relax one person might actually dysregulate another. There is no “one size fits all” method for self care 🧠🦄

Just because I’m a therapist doesn’t mean I have ”the answer” this post is just about sharing what works for me as a reminder that we all need tools ⚒️ 🧰💕
