When your dog greets you with something in its mouth, it is a direct way for the dog to regulate their nervous system and emotions. When a dog experiences a sudden spike in excitement—such as when you come home from work—the massive rush of endorphins and adrenaline can easily overwhelm their nervous system. Grabbing a toy, shoe, sock or random object acts as an emotional circuit breaker, allowing them to channel that intense energy into a safe, physical outlet. In animal psychology, this is known as displacement behavior.

To elaborate on the science, when an animal experiences intense, competing emotions (like the joy of your return mixed with the stress of waiting), they unconsciously perform an unrelated task—like biting down on an object—to release internal tension.

Dogs process much of their world through their mouths. The physical act of holding, carrying or gently pressing an object activates the parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) nervous system. This lowers their heart rate and helps them transition from a chaotic state back to a calm one.
