Sands Funeral Chapel - Nanaimo

Sands Funeral Chapel - Nanaimo Sands Funeral Chapel - Nanaimo is proudly Canadian owned and operated. In 1933, George Chapman built Chapman Funeral Chapel at 1 Newcastle Avenue.

In May of 1937, Chapman sold his facility to James Dyson Hirst and Earle Cathers Westwood; the name was changed to Westwood/Hirst Chapel of Flowers. Hirst later sold his interest in the funeral home, and it became Westwood Chapel of Flowers. Laverne Sands of Victoria purchased Westwood Chapel of Flowers in 1971. Sands at that time had extensive south Island exposure and this acquisition made Sands

truly an Island firm. In 1986, Sands Nanaimo was acquired by Arbor Memorial Inc., which is a Canadian company engaged in providing interment rights, cremations, funerals and associated merchandise and services to thousands of families each year across Canada.

What happens after the service is complete?

For many families, this time brings more responsibilities including paperwork, legal steps, and unanswered questions—often while they're still navigating grief.

The process of settling a loved one’s affairs extends beyond the memorial, and the support you receive should as well.

Our Aftercare & Estate Settlement Support is designed to help guide you through what comes next:
- Assistance with important documents and estate-related tasks
- Support in understanding and navigating complex next steps
- Ongoing care, so you don’t have to manage it all on your own

For us, compassionate care goes beyond the service. It means being there in the moments that follow, with guidance you can rely on.

May is Asian Heritage Month, a time to honour the rich heritage, histories, and contributions of Asian communities across Canada.

From art and cuisine to innovation and leadership, Asian Canadians have played a vital role in shaping the vibrant, diverse country we call home. This month is an opportunity for Canadians to learn, reflect, and celebrate these stories and achievements.

From observing Ching Ming traditions and exploring Arbor's Chinese gardens to remembering Filipino lives and legacy during Undas, join us in experiencing the diversity and unique perspectives that strengthen our communities every day.

Our communities are shaped by the many cultures, traditions, and stories that bring us together.

Today, on World Day for Cultural Diversity, we celebrate the diversity that makes Canada so vibrant—from coast to coast. The languages, customs, and lived experiences of people from all backgrounds help create a nation rooted in connection, understanding, and belonging.

We are proudly Canadian owned and operated, and honoured to serve and support the diverse communities we call home, today and every day.

Families are the foundation of strong communities—and they come in many forms.

This International Day of Families, we were reminded of how deeply family shapes our lives—through shared moments, traditions, and everyday support.
However family looks, the bonds we share live on in the stories we tell and the memories we hold close.
