Hygge (pronounced Hoo-gah) is the Danish concept that incorporates a way of life. It can be described by words like; coziness, comfort, togetherness, contentment, gratitude, and joy. Hygge can be practiced in any season but winter is when we may need it the most. With the increased darkness and time spent indoors, winter can lead us to feel more sleepy and less inspired in life. Following a hygge mindset can bring more delight to this time of year.
Create a cozy and warm environment with things like:
-warm, soft light bulbs, twinkly lights, candles
-delicious hot beverages
-fuzzy blankets, pillows and slippers
-cozy spaces: hyggekrog = cozy nook, man cave, she shed
Activities like:
-games night with loved ones
-crafting: whittling wood, sewing, painting, drawing, origami
-reading a book
-doing puzzles, crosswords
-skiing, snowshoeing, building snow forts, sledding
Enjoying simple pleasures like:
-savoring a piece of chocolate
-gazing out the window
-pausing activities to enjoy a hot beverage
-having a long shower or soak in the tub
Cultivating wellness and being in the present moment by:
-disconnecting from the digital world
-acknowledging three things to be grateful for everyday
-mindfully eating: avoiding multitasking, chewing slowly, noting the flavours
-taking time for rest and relaxation
This time of year tends to be high on hygge due to the holiday vibes but it doesn’t have to end just because a holiday is over. Feel free to use these practices throughout the winter especially if winter is a hard time of year for you. When spring rolls around, hygge activities can change to suit the season. This may be the time to have bonfires and star gaze or go for a nature walk and listen to bird songs.
What brings warm fuzzy feelings is very individual so pay attention to what sparks delight in you.
