even if it *is* depression, anxiety, adhd, burnout, or all of the above — you’re not the broken one, diva 💅

you’re just trying to function in a world that is absurdly overstimulating

You know that moment you catch your reflection in a shop window and your brain immediately goes full critical judgement on your appearance? Bleh.

Here’s the thing: that feeling isn’t just you being “brutally honest with yourself.” It could be that you’ve split yourself into two people: there’s the actual you trying to live your life, and then there’s this inner critic who’s running 24/7 surveillance on your appearance like it’s their full-time job.

I see this constantly with clients here in Nelson and across BC, and I’ve experienced it myself (more times than I’d like to admit). This pattern pulls you out of just existing in your body and shoves you into a state of constantly performing for an imaginary audience that never takes a breather.

So this non-stop self-monitoring creates massive shame and makes how you actually feel inside seem completely irrelevant. Your reflection isn’t the problem, YOU are not the problem. The problem is that you’ve started judging yourself through someone else’s imaginary eyes instead of your own. 🤷‍♀️

In my counselling sessions, we work to break this pattern apart. And here’s the good part: the main tool is stupidly simple. I give you explicit permission to stop performing. My job is to consistently create a space where you can show up exactly as you are. Messy, hilarious, chaotic, wearing the same sweatpants for three days… it’s all welcome here.

When you receive that permission again and again, the volume gets turned down on the imaginary audience you’ve been performing for. You get to reclaim what it feels like to be you. The shame spirals don’t have a critic to perform for anymore, and your worth is no longer tangled up in how you look. You just get to exist again. ✨
