What can art therapy offer the psychedelic therapeutic journey?

I'm very excited to be offering a new two-part professional training this fall exploring the unique role of art therapy within psychedelic preparation and integration.

Psychedelic and other non-ordinary state experiences can bring forward imagery, emotions, memories, bodily sensations, archetypal material and insights that can sometimes be difficult to capture through words alone.

Art therapy offers another language.

Through image-making, metaphor, symbolism, somatic awareness and the creative process, we can create ways of witnessing, exploring and integrating experiences that may initially feel ineffable.

Psychedelics & Art Therapy: Preparation, Integration & the Creative Process is an experiential, trauma-informed and harm-reduction-focused professional training offered through the Kutenai Art Therapy Institute and Centre of the HeArt.

🌿 Two progressive parts
🎨 Experiential art therapy practices

✨ Meet the Facilitator: Charmaine Husum ✨

What happens when more than 13 years of experience in psychedelics, art therapy, somatic practice, and altered states come together?

For Charmaine Husum, RCAT-S, DKATI, RCS, MTC, CT, it has become a deeply integrative body of work grounded in clinical practice, trauma-informed care, harm reduction, creativity, and the understanding that some experiences simply cannot be expressed through words alone.

Charmaine is a Registered Canadian Art Therapist, Somatic Counsellor, clinical supervisor, educator, international presenter, and author of Psychedelics and Art Therapy: A Trauma-Informed Manual for Somatic Self-Discovery (Routledge, 2025).

Her work explores how imagery, symbolism, metaphor, somatic awareness, creativity, meditation, parts work, dreamwork, and transpersonal approaches can support psychedelic preparation and integration.

She has trained healthcare professionals through TheraPsil, teaches with KATI, presents internationally, and has facilitated psychedelic integration groups in Canada, the U.S., and Peru.

Now, she brings this experience to Psychedelics & Art Therapy, an 8-week professional training exploring the therapeutic work surrounding psychedelic and other non-ordinary state experiences.

This is not training in administering psychedelics. It is an exploration of how art therapy and somatic approaches can support safety, meaning-making, integration, and transformation.

Learn with Charmaine and explore what becomes possible when we give form to experiences that exist beyond words.

🍂🎨 A New School Year is Almost Here at KATI! 🎨🍂

There is something special about this time of year. The studio begins to come alive again, new materials find their way onto the shelves and another group of emerging art therapists prepares to begin their journey.

As we get ready to welcome our new students to the Kutenai Art Therapy Institute, we also welcome them into The Wellspring, the larger community of students, graduates, instructors, art therapists and creatives who continue to learn from and inspire one another.

A wellspring is a place where something continually rises and flows, and we think this beautifully reflects the journey of becoming an art therapist. Throughout the year, students will be invited to explore their creativity, deepen their understanding of themselves and others, develop therapeutic skills, engage in practicum and research and discover their own emerging identity as an art therapist.

To our incoming students, welcome. 💚

You are beginning a journey that will ask you to create, reflect, question, connect and grow. We hope The Wellspring becomes a place you can return to throughout that journey for inspiration, community and reminders of the many different paths that exist within the field of art therapy.

And to our returning students, graduates, faculty and wider KATI community, thank you for continuing to contribute to the wellspring and for helping create a place where the next generation of art therapists can grow.

Here's to a new year of art-making, learning, connection and becoming. 🌿

Step into the forest and discover a world full of wonder, creativity, and adventure!

Designed for children ages 8–12, Forest Camp invites young artists to explore the beauty and wisdom of the woods through art, play, and outdoor discovery. Through painting, sculpture, printmaking, natural materials, storytelling, and hands-on creative activities, participants will slow down, observe closely, and let the forest spark their imagination. Daily outdoor explorations encourage curiosity, mindfulness, and appreciation for the ecosystems that surround us.

Guided by Kutenai Art Therapy Institute's art therapy-informed approach, campers will build confidence, creativity, and a sense of belonging in a supportive, small-group environment where every child is encouraged to explore, create, and connect. We still have two 50% subsidies available.
