Part II

A while back, maybe 2 years ago, I was with a group of women and I spoke, "I don't fully understand it, but I feel I am entering into a time of grief."

And yes, I have experienced a lot of loss these last couple of years. An abortion - my first pregancy. The death of my Grandfather. My marriage. Both of my family's dogs. Surrendering custody of my pup. And now my Fiadh.

At the beginning of this period of time I found a dead owl on the side of the road. I went home to get my drum and returned to bury her by the river where she lived. The message from that ceremony was the flipping of the coin, the turning of the wheel - life, death, life again. How close these two things exist with just a thin veil between them.

I think that this is when the portal of loss opened for me. Preparing me for what was to come.

Grief and love. Inextricable.

When something or someone dies, energy is not lost, but space is created for something new to be born.

The affection, laughter, comfort, and love that this kitty brought to my life has boistered me to keep going. Caring for her was such a joy. She came to me when I most needed her.

And in this moment of her leaving, I know I will be okay.

I am surrounded by such compassionate and supportive community. I have the unconditional love of my family. The best roommate and landlord. A workplace that doesn't want me to hide what I am going through.

And... a new love that has given me a family in this place I now call home. Family is always what was missing for me here in the Kootenays. I love you. And I am so grateful.

I feel that part of Fiadh's death, or the timing at least, is because I am on the verge of a new phase of my life and identity. One that will require immense expansion and space to grow.

Did she have to die? No.
Was it random? Maybe.

But she did die and I choose to enfold this truth into my path and purpose.

But oh... she will come with me. She is my angel now.

Part I

When my teacher Susun W**d gives death to an animal she does not do it alone.

There is the woman who holds the animal, the woman who holds the blade, and the woman who walks in the woods. She who walks holds the grief.

This week I was the woman who walks in the woods. But there was no blade. And there was no one holding my girl.

She was on her way home - cutting through the woods at the front of the property where I live.

I believe she was attacked by surprise. From above. It would have been quick. I know she wouldn't have been afraid.

She was so brave and so confident. Fierce Fiadh. She needed to be free - it was her nature and I had to learn to trust her fully. She always came home.

I never lost hope, but deep down I was preparing for the worst. There were signs. I came across many groups of Ravens and crows perching on rocks, lines, and sheds as I searched the forest and neighbouring homesteads.

My final attempt was to knock on my neighbours doors asking if they had seen her and if I could check their garages and outbuildings.

"Oh we see her all the time, but not today".

She had become bolder than I thought! Venturing further, expanding her playground.

No luck.

Dusk had arrived and as I approached my driveway I ducked into the woods. One last patch of forest to check.

I called out to her, "Fiiiiiiadh, it's time to come home my love. We miss you. There are treats and cuddles for you. Sue Sue misses you too. It's time to come home my baby."

And that's when I found her. She looked so small.

My heart dropped into the earth and my voice rose into the trees. No. No no no no no.

My sweet angel. My Fifi. My baby girl. My mitten kitten.

Gone.

This time of year always feels bittersweet to me. As we pass the solstice the light starts to wane and this is refllected in the plants! The lush green of spring turns shades of yellow, flowers bloom creating seeds for next season, and the harvest truly begins.

It reminds me to drink in every moment and revel in the cycles of life, death, and rebirth. I hope you do the same.

I am stocked with herbal essentials for summer adventures...

YARROW TINCTURE • Fresh flowering yarrow (Achillea millefolium) in 100 proof vodka convenienty packaged in a spray bottle!

Yarrow used topically, is extremely effective at warding off insects. Studies have compared it in effectiveness to DEET. Protection without the harmful chemicals.

I also use yarrow tincture as a wound spray. It prohibits growth of bacteria cleaning the wound and stopping bleeding.

Energetically it is a herb of protection and can used as a boundary spray.

CALENDULA SALVE • Homegrown calendula blossoms (Calendula officinalis) in olive oil with local beeswax.

These blossoms pack subtle yet powerful actions. They soothe inflammation, calm redness and promote deep cellular healing.

Work with calendula topically for scratches, wounds, eczema or psoriasis - and more!

PLANTAIN SALVE • Garden plantain (Plantago major) leaves in olive oil with local beeswax.

You may know plantain as the w**d to grab when you get stung by a bee or wasp. I have used it this way, leaves chewed up on the spot and applied as a poultice, many times. It truly takes the pain away instantaneously. It is probably growing in your lawn or garden!

The salve is incredible to use on itchy skin of any kind - mosquito bites, nettle stings, hives... oh so soothing.
