Another amazing week of camp in the books! ✨

We explored topics like empowerment, social-media/online safety, mindfulness and self-esteem. Along with discussing these topics, we were also able to embrace our creative side by doing activities like rock painting, tote-bag decorating, clay magnets, photo frame decorating, and bedazzling sunglasses and hair clips!

A huge thank you to the Murray Family (Pictou) Public Library and Decoste Culture Hub, along with Creative Pictou County, for allowing us to use their space, Melissa Fanning and Heather DeVouge from Nova Scotia Health for painting kindness rocks with the girls, and to all of our campers and families for participating in our camp.

We look forward to seeing you all again next summer! ☀️

Today is Emancipation Day, marking the anniversary of the Slavery Abolition Act taking effect across the British Empire on August 1, 1834.This day is a time to reflect on history, honour the strength and resilience of Black communities, and recognize the rich heritage of African Nova Scotians. It is also an important reminder of the ongoing work needed to challenge systemic racism and build a more inclusive future for everyone.

Let’s use today to learn, reflect, and commit to meaningful change.

Each year on August 1, we mark Emancipation Day, recognizing the anniversary of the Slavery Abolition Act coming into effect across the British Empire in 1834. While this historic milestone ended the legal enslavement of many people of African descent, it did not end the inequities that slavery created. Those legacies continue to shape lives and communities today.

Our Empowerment Camp last week was full of creativity, connection, and so many laughs!

We explored empowerment, social media, mindfulness, and self-care through activities like journaling, tote bag decorating, clay magnets, mirror decorating, and found so many little ways to encourage one another along the way. Watching them be themselves, try new things, and build each other up was honestly the best part.

Thank you to every girl who brought her energy, ideas, and personality to camp, you made the week what it was. And a huge thank you to Ward One Recreation Centre NG for giving us a space to create such special memories together!

Twenty-five years ago today, Nova Scotia legally recognized what we already knew in our hearts: love, care, and family come in many different forms. In July 2001, our province made it legal for same-sex couples to adopt children together. 🌈 As we celebrate this 25th anniversary, it is important to look at this moment through a wider lens. This wasn't just a win for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. It was a victory for children who needed loving homes. It was a step forward for women, non-binary parents, and q***r families who fought hard to be seen as equals under the law. But true equality means making sure every family has what they need to thrive.

Information Sharing: Disability Pride Parade!

People First Pictou County is hosting a Disability Pride Parade on Friday, July 10, 2026, at Glasgow Square.

The day will begin with a flag raising ceremony at 10:30 a.m., followed by the parade walk at 11:00 a.m. and events from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Enjoy family fun, free pizza, displays and activities, and live entertainment. Everyone is welcome!
