🦶 Nursing Diagnosis vs. Medical Diagnosis 🩺

Did you know that nurses and physicians often look at the same condition from different—but equally important—perspectives?

A medical diagnosis identifies the disease or condition itself, such as diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, arthritis, or neuropathy.

A nursing diagnosis focuses on how that condition affects the individual and the risks it creates. In foot care, this may include:
✔ Risk for skin breakdown
✔ Impaired tissue integrity
✔ Risk for infection
✔ Impaired mobility
✔ Risk for falls
✔ Difficulty performing self-care

For example, a physician may diagnose a client with diabetes. As foot care nurses, our assessment looks at how diabetes is affecting the feet and lower limbs, including circulation, sensation, skin integrity, and overall foot health.

This allows us to develop individualized care plans focused on prevention, education, early intervention, and referrals when needed.

💙 Medical diagnoses tell us what condition exists.
💙 Nursing diagnoses help guide how we care for the person living with that condition.

Together, they help us provide comprehensive, patient-centered foot care and work toward the best possible outcomes for our clients.
