"Boundaries are the distance at which I can love you and me simultaneously." - Prentis Hemphil
Many people find it difficult to start setting boundaries because they worry it will disappoint others, create conflict, or push people away. In reality, healthy boundaries often allow us to stay connected without abandoning ourselves.
If you find yourself emotionally drained, resentful, overextended, or carrying responsibility for everyone else's feelings, it may be a sign that you've learned to prioritize the needs of others while overlooking your own.
Boundaries invite a different question:
What am I feeling? What do I need? What is mine to carry, and what belongs to someone else?
When we consistently ignore our own limits, relationships can become imbalanced. Over time, we may lose touch with our own voice, needs, and inner experience.
Healthy boundaries are not walls. They are an act of self-respect and self-care. They create enough space for us to remain connected to others while also staying connected to ourselves.
In counselling, we often explore the beliefs, family patterns, and protective parts that make boundary-setting difficult. Together, we can build greater awareness, self-trust, and confidence so that caring for yourself no longer feels selfish, but essential.
Because your needs matter too.
