A big thank you to Aveta Midwifery for funding our Coffee and Tea!

For those who don't know Aveta is one of our local Midwiferies here in New Westminster. They also do just Postpartum care for those who aren't able to get midwifery care for their pregnancy. This is a great option to help bridge the gap between OB care and Family doctors.

Thank you to New Westminster Family Place and Neighborhood Small Grants! Many years of support for our group.

With Mother's Day tomorrow we would like to take this time to re-introduce who we are and how our meetups work.

Started in April of 2022 two local doulas took a step to help close the gap between home life and professional support during the postpartum period of childbearing. We created a free safe meeting spot for mothers to get peer to peer support, make friends and be able to access resources they may have not known about. Working hard with those in the community center, city hall, community grants and local business we were able to continue keeping this group completely free to all that want to attend. We started in the old Centennial community center meeting every other week then to every week because the need was so great. Our first meet up was for a pregnancy support group originally with just three of us in the room. We soon grew to 20 mothers and their babies and continued growing every year. We also have a private WhatsApp chat for every year to help continue community building as our children grow. The original group now has 3 and 4 year olds going through preschool and getting ready for kindergarten.

What we look like today:

We now meet in the new building Temesewtx (TACC) with much help and support for many individuals. It is now just one of our doulas still volunteering her time to set up the room and run circle time. We try to have special guest speakers and currently are running our second first aid education class.

What to expect joining for the first time:

We are in multipurpose room 1A, next door is childminding through the community center. We have coffee and tea available and sometimes even snacks. Chairs are set up in a circle and a soft play mat is in the middle. You can take a seat or sit on the floor, whatever you're comfortable with. In the first half hour 9:30am to 10am is very casual where you can just get comfortable, settle baby or grab a drink. Usually a random conversation has started just to break the ice. Once things slow down with people arriving we start circle time. Going around the room each person gets time to introduce themselves and their child/dren, talk about something that was difficult for the week/vent about something they want to talk about and then a positive for the week. Talking is not a requirement and we often have many individuals just introduce themselves.

Sometimes things get very chatty and that's the nature of people getting together, other times it's very quiet and calm.

In the summer park meetups are planned but our doula doesn't always get to attend these meetings as they have other responsibilities. A summer picnic is planned each year with snacks and everyone is welcome at this. Partners, siblings, new and old members. This year it is August 9th in Queens park, for more information feel free to send a message.

We are ever changing and evolving but try to keep the core reason why this group was started.

Special thanks to Women's Mental Health, Neighborhood Small Grants, New Westminster City Grants and all the individuals that have helped to keep us going!

Next week May 13th our group will be hosting a special guest doing an infant and toddler first aid information class. We won't be doing our regular circle time unfortunately but I do encourage anyone who doesn't want to participate in the class to come meet for a walk if the weather is nice or maybe a swim with others.

If you want to participate in the class it is $30per person, feel free to send us a message if you want to join. Babies are still welcome in the room or TACC has childminding next door as well.
