𝗗𝗘𝗟𝗘𝗚𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗠 𝗔𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗟𝗗 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗟𝗬 𝗩𝗜𝗦𝗜𝗧 𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗧 𝗗𝗢𝗢𝗥 - We were honored to welcome members of the Gunma DARC Treatment Centre’s Family Program in Takasaki, Japan, to Canada as they came to learn more about Last Door’s Treatment Program and Family Enhancement Program.

Over the course of three days, they toured our Adult and Youth programs, joined us for our regular Wednesday night Family Group, and stayed overnight at our Keystone Retreat property to experience a condensed version of our four-day Family Enhancement retreat.

We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to connect, share, and further strengthen our valued relationship with our partners in Japan.

Another delegation from Japan will be visiting soon as well. This is what a Recovery community does .. it lifts up a city and the community.

Don Burnstick is a proud Cree from Alexander First Nation in Treaty 6 Territory and one of Canada's most sought-after Indigenous comedians, speakers, and wellness educators. After overcoming addiction in 1985, he dedicated his life to helping others heal through humour, storytelling, and culturally grounded approaches to recovery.

Educated in Holistic Urban Youth Development at the University of San Diego and certified as an Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counsellor through the Nechi Institute, Don has spent more than 30 years inspiring audiences across Canada and internationally. He is also the creator and performer of the acclaimed one-man production I Am Alcohol – Healing the Wounded Warrior, which powerfully explores addiction, trauma, and recovery through Indigenous storytelling.

Dr. Alvis Yu is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Calgary and a recognized leader in addiction medicine. He practices as an addiction specialist at Renfrew Recovery Centre, the Claresholm Centre for Mental Health and Addictions, and Alberta's Opioid Dependency Program (ODP Calgary/VODP).

As Provincial Medical Director for Outpatient Addiction Services with Recovery Alberta, Dr. Yu plays a key leadership role in advancing evidence-based addiction treatment and improving access to high-quality outpatient care across the province.

Dr. Imran Ghauri is an experienced Emergency Medicine and Addiction Medicine physician who has practiced in both the United Kingdom and Canada. In addition to his leadership role with Recovery Alberta, he provides addiction medicine services through Alberta's Virtual Opioid Dependency Program (VODP) and within the provincial correctional healthcare system.

His work focuses on improving access to evidence-based addiction treatment, advancing clinical excellence, and developing innovative approaches that strengthen addiction medicine across diverse healthcare settings.

Today marks a truly monumental moment for the Siksika Nation as leaders, Elders, community members, and supporters gathered to celebrate the ribbon-cutting of a brand-new, Nation-owned, fully funded 75-bedrecovery community .

Funded by the Government of Alberta as part of the 11 Recovery Communities being established across the province, this facility represents hope, healing, and a new beginning for so many people and families.

Last Door Recovery Society was honoured to be asked to assist with the opening of this incredible facility. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to be part of this journey and to witness the vision become a reality.

A special thank-you goes to the Last Door Recovery Communities in Red Deer and Calgary, who travelled to Siksika to celebrate this historic occasion with us and generously volunteered their time to support the day.

Today is more than a ribbon-cutting. It is the beginning of a healing journey and a powerful gift to the community. It represents the hard work, dedication, and commitment of so many people who have worked tirelessly over the past few years to bring this vision to life.

Most importantly, it is about people getting well, families finding hope, and lives being changed.

We are honoured to stand alongside the Siksika Nation as this new chapter begins. May this 𝗜𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗮𝗽𝘆𝗼𝘆𝗶𝘀 become a place of healing, strength, connection, and lasting recovery for generations to come.

Dr. Maire Durnin-Goodman has worked in the fields of addiction medicine and occupational health for more than 20 years, supporting individuals throughout every stage of the recovery journey. Her work focuses on helping people access treatment, engage in long-term recovery, and successfully return to productive, meaningful lives with the appropriate support, resources, and accountability.

She currently practices in an opioid agonist treatment clinic, a recovery centre, and provides occupational health assessments and monitoring, bringing extensive expertise in recovery-oriented care and workplace reintegration.

Join Mathew Milen for Part 2 of this practical workshop as he explores evidence-informed approaches to workplace recovery, with a focus on assessment, post-traumatic growth, reintegration, and long-term monitoring for employees working in safety-sensitive and decision-critical roles.

Using case-based discussions and real-world examples from public safety settings, this session demonstrates how workplaces can create recovery-oriented systems that support employees through every stage of healing while strengthening both individual wellbeing and organizational resilience.

Mathew Milen is a Registered Clinical Social Worker specializing in psychotherapy for trauma-exposed Public Safety Personnel and individuals living with substance use disorders. He works closely with police, emergency services, and other public safety organizations, providing specialized clinical care and supporting workplace recovery initiatives throughout the Edmonton region.

In addition to his clinical practice, Mat regularly consults with peer support teams and workplace safety programs, conducts assessments for safety-sensitive and decision-critical workers, and helps organizations strengthen recovery-oriented workplace models. He is the author and co-author of several peer-reviewed publications, with research supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).
