how acupuncture relieves pain based on the National Geographic Article:

1. Local Cellular Response:

When an acupuncture needle is inserted and gently moved, it gives the underlying tissue a tiny physical tug. This mild stimulation triggers nearby cells to release natural, pain-soothing chemicals like adenosine, histamine, and serotonin.

2. Nervous System Activation:

The local chemical reaction alerts nearby nerves, which send signals up the spinal cord to the brain. This causes the body to release endorphins—its natural, built-in painkillers—while also helping the brain block out deeper, chronic pain signals.

3. Brain Rewiring:

Brain scans show that regular acupuncture actually changes how the brain handles stress and emotion. It calms down the specific areas of the brain that process physical pain, providing lasting relief for conditions like headaches, arthritis, and back pain.

Do you have sleep issues?
Falling asleep is hard?
Staying asleep is hard?
So, how does acupuncture help?

Acupuncture increases nighttime melatonin production and increases the total sleep time. In studies done, those receiving acupuncture fell asleep faster, were less aroused at night, and were less stressed. So what are you waiting for?!

Heart 7 or Shenmen:

The Anmian point,
> It is an extra point that is located in the depression, at the junction of the skull base and the mastoid process, just below the earlobe. It is a master point for treating insomnia.

Acupuncture or acupressure on this point can help open the gate to relieve the energy blockage for our spirit/mind/emotion.

Early pregnancy is an amazing time filled with great transformation. However, it can also be a time of difficult challenges for a new mother if she has issues like:
-morning sickness, exhaustion, anxiety, and stress
-threatened miscarriage
Acupuncture can help support women through these times by easing symptoms and strengthening the newly pregnant mother as she transitions through this period.

As little baby grows and develops, so does the mother's body. It is during this time that an expecting mother may experience new aches and pains as well as some common syndromes. Acupuncture can help alleviate many of these, including
-hip pain, sciatica, back pain
-heart burn constipation, hemorrhoids,
- depression, insomnia,
-  sinusitis,
- pregnancy-induced hypertension,

Around 36 weeks of pregnancy, we start preparing for Labour:)
It is recommended to come in for a few sessions before your due date for "cervical ripening," in which acupuncture points are selected to help prep the body for labor.  Women who come in for 2-4 treatments before giving birth show to have easier deliveries with fewer complications.

Are you wondering what treatment you want to book for your next appointment: Cupping? Guasha? Or Tuina?
The answer to this question is not simple.

first, let’s compare cupping and gua sha: Gua sha is a treatment very similar to cupping and works on the same basis. Both treatments are performed to relieve the stagnation of qi.

Cupping involves placing cups on the skin to create suction, and the suction increases blood circulation to the area.

During gua sha, a flat smooth tool is used to gently scrape the tissues and muscles to break down muscle adhesions and help fresh blood flow.

Cupping should be applied in an area with abundant muscles like the back, abdomen, thighs, and legs.

On the other hand, gua sha can be used both on the muscular area like the back and shoulders and on areas with tiny muscles like the neck and face as well as joints.
I find both techniques to serve as a diagnostic tool and a treatment based on how the tissue responds. In my opinion, if you have tension & tightness in the back of your head and neck, book in for a gua sha treatment, but if you have shoulder, lower back & hip pain, cupping is a better choice for you.

▶️On the other hand, Tui na is a Chinese massage that stimulates the flow of qi to promote balance and harmony within the body using many of the same principles of acupuncture.
▶️ The goal of tuina massage is to create harmony in the body's yin and yang by removing blockages and disturbances that manifest as illness, disease, and emotional issues.
▶️ Also, passive joint movements are used to restore muscles and joint function.
▶️Tuina massage can be used to treat pain and illness or to maintain good health.
✅️ The technique is effective in reducing stress, encouraging relaxation, and deepening sleep. It’s often used for conditions and injuries related to the musculoskeletal and nervous systems.
✅️Tuina massage is often used to improve function and reduce pain affecting the joints, bones, and muscles.
✅️If you have headaches (migraine or tension headache), stress & anxiety, fatigue, insomnia, and musculoskeletal disorders, it is better to book both treatments of acupuncture and tui na to address these issues.
